Can Anyone share their method of adding landing light/lights to a built RV with flush mount wing tip NAV lights This RV$ was built with highest build quality in 1989. The wing end caps are riveted. Thank you for any information or knowledge for the easiest way to add the lights in the wings

Many of us legacy RV-6 builders installed the Duckworks leading edge lights. They seem to still be available but most likely you will need to remove the wingtips for access to the wing ribs. I upgraded my DuckWorks lights with FlyLED elements for a tremendous boost in light output.

Driving lights: no holes to cut, very inexpensive, and work surprisingly well as landing and taxi lights.

Sam, Thank you for a great response to my question. I am now clear on what the task will include. Hope you had a great 4th.

Be aware that many non-aviation LED lights will generate huge amounts of electrical interference that will make the COM radio unusable. Unfortunately, it is impossible to know which lights are good options without actually trying them or with a field report. I tried a set of lights from Amazon that threw out a lot of light and fit my Duckworks brackets but were unusable due to RFI.

Sam, Thank you for the advice. I have already had this issue with other none aviation electronics. Wonder if changing to white shielded wires on these devices will eliminate the issue?

Probably not, but the electrical engineers on the forum might offer other suggestions. The problem is the power supplies the inexpensive LEDs use create noise that migrates into the aircraft's wiring. Aviation LEDs use different (more expensive) power supplies that don't generate the noise.

The FlyLEDS units I referenced that are now in use on my RV-6 are silent and have proven field history.

Assuming they are from Amazon. do you have the part # or most driving lights approximately 6" long low profile would do the job?

I can only speak from my experience, but I have had no interference on my iCom A200 or my Bluetooth connection from my Trio autopilot to iFly on my android tablet.

My biggest concern here would be longevity. They are going to be subjected to a lot of vibration.
So far so good, they are only attached to the cowling. There is also a vertical brace to the lower cowl not shown in the picture. I was initially concerned about the mounting bracket that came with them. About 10 hours on the installation so far with my smooth running O320.

With the price, a spare set on hand!

I love this idea. I put in a leading edge light but had to decide whether I wanted it aimed for landing or taxi, couldn’t do both very well with taildragger. I’m going to try these, thanks for sharing! I’m assuming you used the stock bolt on the bottom for mounting to some aluminum plate?

I put the FlyLEDs landing/taxi quad combo into my existing duckworks leading edge mount and it's incredible. Crazy bright and you get plenty of light for both. Also individually switchable which is nice.

If you can find some new or used RMD wingtip lights, they are simply amazing! Too bad they are no longer made. Here's my setup with the FlyLED quad system! Are they bright? They have hired me to burn the weeds off of the edge of the runway.........:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

My friend just replaced the original HID bulbs in his old Duckworth lights with H3 LED bulbs. The original bulbs drew 6 amps each which caused the CB to trip in his Vertical Power system. The new LEDs draw 0.25 amps each and the light changed from yellow-ish to white. It was a drop-in replacement with the wingtip removed. Cost was about $10 each at walmart.com. The plane hasn't flown so I don't have other details to report.

I added landing lights to my RV-4 using the Duckworks kit and FlyLEDs four light taildragger LED lights with their wig-wag module. They work awesome, like daytime. Highly recommended, installation was easy and was a good weekend job to do both sides.
