Insulation recommendations.

I am going to set the glareshield on the fuselage permanently soon but before I do I would like to insulate the inside of the firewall with a good quality insulating material.
My question to the list is what is the best material to use and where do I find it?
Any and all advice from this group would be greatly appreciated. Thanks:)

I saw the sondex products at Sun N fun. He has a box at his display with an "open me" sign. After talking with him, I bit and opened the box: There was a boom box blasting inside. Until I opened the box, I never heard it. I bought $300 bucks worth from him to insulate my firewall, floor, and partial sidewalls. The whole kit for an RV7A was way too much money. My interest was really just the firewall.

Ask, he did split out the firewall package for me.

My 2 c...I'd suggest a different route...take your $300 and spend it on better quality ANR headset instead! (Leave the FW as is it means a lighter airplane and easier to maintain)...More Bang for your buck. If you already have good quality ANR Headsets and it is still not quite enough. Then OK go ahead....Regards, Rudi

I think I over did it on my 7A

by using a high temp foil/fiber/foil product from Spruce on the firewall, then a closed cell black 1/2" foam behind that. I was looking for both sound and heat protection (hot enough in Vegas already). The foil/fiber/foil insulation is there to protect the foam from high temps and buy me a couple minutes in case of a fire. Works great, though I have no db measurements to prove it.

The main downside is three or four extra pounds up front, and the resulting forward GC I now have.

Good luck. Think Halo.

I agree. I have nothing on the firewall and have had the last 4 people I gave a ride to say they could not believe how quiet it was in my RV. Just have a set of David Clarck's with ANR.
I also have never had a heat issue. I have been in other planes with 0-360's and had heat issues in the front cockpit. I have never felt engine heat while flying the RV.

best option

Thanks for the opinions, advise and links. One is sure to learn a bunch for posting a question to this list. After all the study of this subject I am of the mind to do nothing, rather than putting the wrong material on the firewall and run the risk of a fire hazard and/or toxic fumes I will, as suggested, invest in some good quality ANR headsets. Thanks guys,

I used duct board for the firewall insulation. cut to fit the various segments on the inside of the fw then used one #8 machine screw + fender washer in center of major segments + high temp silicone for glue. Use 3/4" hole saw for penetrations. totally fire proof.
