I had a real scare today-total pilot error

Pop Quiz:
You are descending from cruise altitude with your RV and realize the r/m and manifold pressure are not responding as you move the throttle. What is the optimum procedure for dealing with this?

Call the tower and ask "What is an "r/m?"

Up here in Denver, we “fly” the mixture control constantly. It’s a huge difference in day-to-day flying technique from our lower altitude brethren. Always messing with it. Friction locks are a lifesaver.

I once heard tell of a guy who pulled his mixture on short final, thinking it was carb heat. Twice. What a dummy.

I've joined the dummy club as well. At 1200' and 4 miles out, inbound to my destination runway situated at the top of a small island, pulled full carb heat. Problem was I pulled mixture, not carb heat.
Really gets your attention when the engine goes quiet. Putting the mixture control back to full rich instantly corrected my blunder.
Cockpit management has been revised to avoid a second heart stopper. Throttle, mixture & carb heat controls are grouped vertically on the panel (RV3) and closely together having similar physical profiles on each control, apparently in my case making distinguishing controls by feel hit and miss. There was a brief private conversation about the dummy in the cockpit.

Some of us even fly the mixture control constantly near sea-level too!

After many years of flying, you will make more mistakes, scare the hell out of yourself and hopefully learn from them and live to tell about them.
You will then be known as an "Experienced Pilot" LOL
