How to route throttle & mixture linkages with Superior cold air intake sump

akmeesan

I'm New Here
Hello,

I have an RV-7 with an IO-360, with Airflow Performance fuel injection. I have a 4-in-2 exhaust system (don't know which brand). I just upgraded from a stock horizontal intake sump to a Superior cold air intake sump. Turns out that:

1. the exhaust system appears to interfere with the oil drain plug
2. the throttle and mixture control brackets won't mount to the new sump

See pictures attached.

I really don't want to change the exhaust system if I don't have to....

Has anyone run into this situation before, and how did you work around it?

Thanks,

Stephane

I have the Superior cold air sump on the 7A, and the fit is exactly the same for the -360 and -390. Have the RSA-5 injection though.

There are at least 2 positions for the oil drain, but by your pics it looks like they are both blocked. Not much help with that. Clint at Vetterman may be able to modify the exhaust.

If I remember right, all the firewall penetrations are in the Vans suggested locations. The superior sump has 2 bolt holes on the right bottom that we used for the throttle cable, but needed to make a custom bracket. Don't shame me for such a dirty engine. That was from the elusive oil leak that ended up being a cracked case!

The mixture cable (for me) uses the Vans lever and bracket mounted to the forward left sump bolts. I found a few pics from the old -360 install, but the new engine uses the same brackets.

The arms on your 3rd and 4th pic can be relocked, and the vans mixture linkage may work. The stock throttle cable was not long enough so I ordered a custom length.

Do you have a plan for the bottom cowl? The sump will change the intake also....

I would be interested to know what exhaust system that is, if it turns out it does work with the cold air sump.

Can anybody else recommend a complete exhaust system for a Lycoming parallel valve 360 with superior cold air induction?

There was a thread on this within the past year. Show Planes sells a throttle and mixture bracket for use with the Superior sump for around 70$. You will also need the brackets to go with it.

I have the same setup.
Short answer,
you need to build the throttle bracket.
I used a side port for oil quick drain.

Vetterman built my exhaust for the parallel valve engine with the superior cold air sump. Fit perfectly. He also built the one for the angle valve engine. They both leave access for the drain plug and control cables.

My vetterman exhaust for the same setup, superior cold air sump. At the time, it was equiped with the ryton sump & did have the oil drain access unrestricted. When I replaced the sump with the new aluminum sump, the drain was restricted & I had to move the quick drain to a side port.
