…for what we have here.

I got the news Friday on Sonex closing their doors (https://www.sonexaircraft.com/), and like a lot of people, immediately thought of all the folks that are affected by it. It just hurts.

Over the timespan of 5 minutes or so the emotion turned to ‘that could have been us’. I was texting a friend this yesterday evening, and his response was along the lines of how VAF would then be more important than ever ‘if it was us’. He’s right, I think.

Susie teaches a free online yoga class via Zoom Saturday mornings from our living room for folks dealing with cancer (www.YogaBridge.org), so I usually scoot out the door and find something to do to keep the house quiet. Didn’t fly today as it was gusting 19 ninety degrees off centerline and OVC low, and I’m a big baby. No fun when you’re spending a dollar a minute to do it, so laptop to Whataburger to jot these thoughts down over breakfast.

Over the past 12 hours I’ve visited SonexPilots.org, AvBrief.com (Paul wrote a nice piece at https://avbrief.com/the-realities-of-the-kit-industry/) and POA to follow along with the folks hurt by this, then a thread inevitably popped up on VAF. In the midst of all this I started to wonder where VAF currently stands in the online world with EAB and the other EAB online communities. These things change over time, so I jumped off to Grok and asked. I was a little taken aback, and somewhat embarrassed.

Then grateful. Profoundly grateful.

Grateful for the folks that make this site shine. Grateful for the vibe. I spend about 95% of my time behind the scenes dealing with the stuff nobody sees (bad actors, day to day admin duties, accounting, etc), so I’m most often down in the weeds trying to stay in business. Seeing folks rally around the idea of continuing, and using their boards as a place to solve problems and find parts gives me comfort that VAF would do the same. Saturday morning the SonexPilots.org board created a new sub-forum called ‘Parts Sources’. They’re adapting in real time.

Like everyone, I’m trying to diversify my skill set to keep me financially afloat in uncertain times (in my case with part time sim work and occasional contract flying). As Paul’s article stated, it’s hard for small businesses to make a living in the homebuilt world. Very hard. As a 1-person homebuilt company myself, I agree wholeheartedly.

I’m grateful for bkervaski (Bill). He spearheaded moving this site to the VERY stable environment it exists on these days. He’s a rock star in the RV community and I’m his biggest fan.

There were eight older folks in the booths near me Saturday at Whataburger, and they had to be pilots. Sounded like retired airline. I take comfort in that. Even on a cloudy, bumpy morning they were out there solving the world’s aviation problems over breakfast taquitos.

Life goes on and we find a way to cope if we can, but some of it still sucks.

I wanted to go fly the RV today. Instead I’ll browse VAF and hang out virtually with the online friends I’m lucky enough to have in my life.

With gratitude to all who make this place what it is, and those who help keep it afloat.

I think most of us on this forum are grateful that you started this so many years and stuck to your beliefs. This place has connected so many of us together and taught countless topics, tips, and tricks to one one another. I truly believe that it is the best online forum on the internet. I certainly hope it continues to afford you the ability to support your family as you have more than deserved it. So glad that you brought Bill onboard to help out. Thank you Doug!

As I've said many times, this site is instrumental in bringing RV people (and just aviation people in general) together for common interests and the greater good of EAB. I have NO idea how I would have completed my plane without being able to post questions here and usually getting good answers within an hour or so. I, for one, am very grateful for Doug's work here. I know it ain't easy. And it ain't cheap.

And along those line of being grateful, as I've said many times, I'm grate to Van for designing awesome airplanes that are fast, efficient and fun to fly, that almost anyone can built if they put their mind to it .............. and subscribe to this forum. Yeah, I'm glad Van's is still around in the same relative form of business that I'm used to. As an RV owner and builder, I need both (Doug's site and Van's Aircraft). And I'm grateful people put in the work to keep both thriving. Here's hoping that both keep evolving and surviving for many years to come.

As a new builder, I’ve never seen anything quite like this forum. It’s amazing how well the community is structured to balance out experience with ambition, with entry questions to niche deep dives. I know it has to take some steering to keep it on the rails as a whole, so I thank you and everyone that participates in a positive manner. And to everyone that is willing to help another builder!

Almost every question I’ve had so far has already been asked, answered, and followed up on with end results.

Looking forward to paying it forward when I can!

This site is part of the reason I bought an RV as my sixth airplane. I really appreciate the "rules of the site" and their strict enforcement - as needed.
I read a ton of threads before buying my 6A and a lot more since. The information on this site helped make my plane safer, more accessible/usable and has also saved me thousand of dollars in decision making. Everyone should be contributing financially as we're all benefiting from the same knowledgebase provided here on VAF.
Great job Doug!

Thanks for the site Doug. I am mostly a lurker, but find loads of help whenever I have needed it. Having this community of support makes owning an RV way much easier now that I have relocated to an area of less.

I can honestly say this site played a MAJOR role in me finally getting a Vans aircraft. I probably started viewing it shortly after you started it. Never thought I'd get to a point in life that I could own a plane, but I kept coming here to daydream. I finally created an account, eventually made a post or two, and got determined to fly my own RV. It's still in pieces in the hanger so I'm not quite there yet. But late summer or fall its going to happen!

Thanks guys! I sincerely appreciate all of you!

I wouldn’t be building if it wasn’t for VAF. It’s an absolute gold mine of information going back many years.
This side of the Atlantic there’s not the support network that’s available in the US. So a site like this is invaluable.
That’s why I’m very happy to pay for it.

I can honestly say, I would not have my airplane if it weren't for this forum! It is what generated my interest in the first place and gave me the confidence to put together my magic carpet! I found it 16 years ago and have read it daily since!

Thoughts from one of the sites Grey Beards:

Back in the Old Days when I was a kid....... :LOL:When I started building SuzieQ, back when we had to forge our own rivets...... OK....maybe not but the kits back in those days were mostly just an assemblage of aluminum pieces with some critical things like bulkheads, ribs etc preformed. Pre-punched was far in the distant and unthought of future. There were not that many builders around, but it seemed we all knew each other. My main mentor Bill Amos was almost always available to answer questions and, also who gave me my first RV-4 ride. (RIP, Bill!) The build was slow because there really weren't a whole lot of people to ask. A neighbor was building a Steene Skybolt, which was not a whole lot of help. I joke that 30% of my time was spent staring at the plans (paper blue prints....!) trying to figure out what they were attempting to tell me. 30% looking for parts and tools, and finally 30% building. All 13,000 rivets had to be drilled, deburred, counter sunk and driven! No small task! There were days I would go out to the hangar, stop and stare, and come back inside, having done nothing. There were days that I looked up to notice it was, somehow, 2 am and I was still out there working! And everything in between. Eventually, over 6.5 years and a lot of life changes later, she came together and became a flying aircraft!

SO: I don't want to say 'You youngsters don't know how good you have it' but you youngsters DON'T know how good you have it. Actually, that is untrue: I think you do! Looking at the statements above about the inspirations this list has given to people who were just thinking about RVs is simply amazing! The information handed out on any given day is priceless source that few other forums have. Encyclopedic! SO much better than The Old Days. And, as diverse as the airplanes are now, there is a commonality that seems to pertain to all models. I am amazed how much different the -4 is from the -10! But still an RV! And now, for crying out loud, there is a HIGH WING RV!! Who would have thought that?

So thank you Doug and Bill for an amazing resource that few outside of our little community are fortunate enough to have. I realize how much it takes to keep the fires burning and you deserve a lot of credit for what we have here and, sometimes, take for granted. Here's to ya! (Clink...🍻)

The forum is not only a gold standard for builders of Van's various models of aircraft, but also recognised by those building other kits as well. I was talking to somebody with a certified aircraft who was having an avionics problem a while back and a few days later asked him how he got on. He said he'd done a search of the Vansairforce Forum and found the answer that solved the issue.

As an owner of a Rans S-7 I lament the lack of a similar forum for their line of products. Doug can be extremely proud of the way he's kept this forum going for so long and especially proud of having kept it on the straight and level for the duration. While disagreements occur, largely this is still a very civil place to hang out. He's got my vote for President. :D

Many years ago Progressive Aerodyne was sold to a group of Chinese investors, who eventually closed the business. SeaRey pilots (Seagulls) have their own forum but many of the OG builders have parked their airplanes, and only a few people still post which is a shame.

Many thanks to the members of this group for tolerating me and answering my questions, after 17 years of building we're hoping to run the engine this month, and have her flying soon after.

If you're ever offered a flight in a SeaRey,TAKE IT!!! You'll see why we call it the SeaRey Smile.

This site was instrumental in my decision to buy a Van’s kit, full stop. I’m sure I’m not alone. The community is great of course, but the site just works, day in, day out. Doug should have his own parking spot in Aurora and lifetime access to the executive washroom.

Doug, dinner on me if you’re ever in southern Vermont.
