Garmin logbook

I have G3X touch and GTN650xi
I have problem with logbook enteries
Some of the entries are missing in logbook, though they are clearly visible on G3X flight logs
While trying to import those specific logs into logbook entry, a message appears, error can not import
Also when I open the said CSV file, a message appears saying, can’t save as CVS file, some data will be lost
Contacted Garmin, but couldn’t solve
Can anyone help?

I think the logbook function in Garmin Pilot needs work and it is nowhere near as good as the logbook functionality in Foreflight, the import of Foreflight data is not robust and I don't know if your currency function is working but it does not work on mine to record flights and automatically assess currency based on accepted logbook entries. I did talk to Jan Mackenzie of Garmin about this at Osh and have sent logs but no resolution yet. Garmin Pilot is much improved over the last couple of years but still needs work.

Should then continue with ForeFlight? Because the pilot comments for airports are amazing in ForeFlight

Pros and cons for both systems, I switched from Pilot to Foreflight in 2023 when doing my instrument rating and have been trying Pilot since they came out with the smart charts and I have Garmin equipment so the GUI is very similar but there are elements of Foreflight that are more refined like the logbook. I have not yet decided which one to stick with.

That is just an issue with Excel trying to be "helpful". It automatically reformats some of the data, specifically dates, when opening the CSV file. This includes adding Excel specific formatting to the cells. This formatting can then not be saved with the CSV.

I recommend a program like CSVed for editing the CSV file, if you really need to.

For actually getting the data to your logbook, I would recommend uploading the CSV file (do not open in Excel) to the web interface.

I tried direct import from SD card, but the fact is, Garmin logbook sucks 😱

I tend to agree with the comment, still cannot get GP to recognize recorded flights for currency purposes for any category SEL, IFR etc. and some of the user functionality to check a chart or an airport requires multiple clicks to get back to where you started and is not super intuitive, but that also appears to be a Garmin thing about going back through the main menu a lot. Smartcharts is good but only really beneficial if you are using the iPad to actually brief and fly the approach otherwise the data is presented on other systems (GNX375 and Aera 760 in my case) in the standard non Smartchart format. For management and flight planning Foreflight appears to still remain the most mature product and also seems a bit more intuitive to me but I do like the layout of some of the GP features and pages.
I do think you need to pick a system and stick with it to learn the nuances and both products continue to improve, leaning towards sticking with FF at this point but have a one year subscription to GP so will see what they fix in the interim.

CJT,

Are you logging all your flights to the SD card in one of your G3X Touch flight displays?

Those files can be imported directly into your free FlyGarmin logbook. No need for a tablet app. I have been doing this for 15 yrs with G3X and G3X Touch systems.

The .csv file you show in your first post does not appear to have been generated by one of your G3X Touch displays.

Just tried again to see if garmin has fixed the logbook import from Foreflight, apparently not, and now will not even import the .csv file, throws an error.

Have not used Garmin but the comments in ForeFlight have been hugely helpful on many occasions. In time and annoyance they’ve saved me more $ than the subscription, I suspect.

I just put everything in excel, with my own columns as desired. Super easy to do, and I can do interesting data searches. BTW, G3X Touch does not record loggable time in the flight log, which is annoying. Garmin knows about this.
