FLYLED Tail Dragger Max

AX-O

Well Known Member
In the words of Tim The Toolman Taylor; more power, auhhh auhhh.

I am in the process of updating a few things on Dilemma. I am installing LED NAV/Strobes and landing lights.

I am installing the FLYLED Tail Dragger Max, found here Here. I currently have the AERO LED SUNSPOT 36, found Here, taxi and landing light but wanted to compare and evaluate if the tilted down FLYLEDs helped with taxi ops.

The weight deference between them is as shown. The AERO LED were 315 gram/.7 lbs. Your light was 730 grams/1.6 lbs.

This installation required running an additional power wire inside the wing because you can control the taxi lights (2 lights angled down) independently from the landing lights (everything on). I am currently waiting on a switch to show up to finish that installation.

I used the existing Duckworks landing brackets which were originally configured with rectangular HID lights and modified for the AERO LEDs.

One of the most difficult things to accomplish was getting the light inside the wing cutout. There are instructions on how to modify things but I managed to get them in without mods (or braking anything). Some of the older RV designs with smaller cutouts (3, 4, 6, 7, 8) will see the same issue. The new larger cutouts (9, 10, 14) will be fine. I had to splice in extra wire on one wing but wiring was very simple. You don't even need a connector on the light, the wire just slides in. I did take the wing tip off to facilitate installation. The light mounted right onto the existing nutplates. The lens fit without any interference although one of my nutplates ended up close and in between 2 LEDs. I put things back together but I have not set the angle of the lights. That will have to wait until the switch shows up for the taxi lights.

I could not wait.. HAD to put power on the landing lights. These things are bright, those buildings are very far away. Will post later after I get it set up.

Wow! That’s a lot of light! I have the FlyLED combo landing/taxi light (4 LEDs) in my RV-4. I didn’t think the 7 stars (or taildragger version) would even fit in there! I feel that a larger cutout would let more light out though, but are the -9, -10, and -14 the only wings that support the larger cutout? This the shape of the leading edge close enough that a -14 lens might work on the other airfoils?

The Rv-10 and Rv-14 airfoil is the same. However thicker than the 2300 series other wings have.

With the amount of light projected from my 3 element assemblies……..
You probably better be careful of starting the grass on fire:D

I love my Flyleds lights

😂 will keep an eye out for that. Joking aside, i will be checking the lens.

FlyLEDS

I have the flyleds for strobe a position lights. They didn't have the landing lights at that time. I LOVE them. Use hardly any power and super bright. If I was building today... FlyLEDs are the only way to go!
