Flap motor retracted or not?

I know this is a dumb question, but I want to make sure I get it right!
I am rigging the flaperon torque tube on my RV 12is, the directions on page 38is/U-03, step 6 tells me to connect the red wire on the flap motor to the negative terminal and the black wire to the positive side on a 12 volt battery until the flap motor is fully retracted ( flaps up). When I do that the motor piston extends not retract? What am I missing? OF course. when I reverse the wires and connect red to positive and black to negative the motor piston retracts.

I believe the directions are wrong. Mine does the same thing. Flaps up is when the motor is retracted. PS, I just use a simple 9v battery to make mine move.

You won’t be able to get the locking bolt in if the flaps are not retracted. Also don’t forget to remove the locking bolt before moving the flap motor or bad things will happen.

Thank you. I spent a couple of hours on this problem today and was about to email Van's with pictures, etc. Just thought I would check here first.
