I took the option to have flush #6 screws in the two F-14112 plates, dimpling the skin and F-01486A with a No. 6 dimple die to accommodate the no. 27 hole called out on 10-14, Step 11. Now on 10-20, it calls for using 8X K-1100-06 nutplates for the option. It appears in 10-20 Figure 2 that they are on the exterior of the skin, but those nutplates do not sit flush in the No. 6 dimples. The dimples would have to be much larger/deeper for that to work. Not sure what I am missing here.

Assume this is for a 14, if you follow the wiki, the top are not dimpled, and K1000-06 are used and the skin is countersunk. I'm not sure if that's what you are asking about?

Also check your nut plate is a -06 not a -6. These are different sizes.

Thanks for getting back to me, Brian. 14A is correct. Got the correct -06 nut plate. Looking at your pic, it looks like the nut plates are under the skin, correct? Couldn't really tell that from Van's drawing. Top two and bottom two nut plates must be behind (inboard) the longeron and stiffener, respectively?

Just looked at mine, and all nutplates are on the interior side of skin/bulkhead/longeron.

Yes inboard, behind the skins and stiffener/longerons. Drawings do have some slight color variations for things behind, but overall I’ve found if it doesn’t make sense and doesn’t fit, something I’ve done is usually wrong, haha.

Here’s what mine looks like - normal nutplates on the longeron as this is countersunk along with the skin. All the rest, the 1100 nutplates.

Worked out well. Thanks to all!

I was ready to do this but the extra work, the delay (Van's shipping department always seems to be backed up, although I could get the screws elsewhere), and the minimal impact on aesthetics and aerodynamic properties made me reconsider.
What's the benefit? Is it just aesthetic?
