Do I need to wait for updates from Van's before upgrading Skyview to 17.1?

I really like the idea of the Emergency Glide feature included in the newest Skyview HDX update. However, the Readme on the Downloads page is unclear and mildly scary about whether I can upgrade, given the fact that it was last updated before the new Dynon software was released.

Do I need to wait for Van's to publish updated Skyview Settings to correspond with 17.1? Or can I just perform the upgrade and just do a test flight to make sure everything's fine?

From the Van's download site (emphasis added). I almost always upgrade the G3x software a couple days after its released and haven't run into any major issues. The nice thing about the Dynon config files is that they are plaintext, so you can see exactly what settings they're supposed to be setting.

This file contains the system settings required to update and configure the Skyview system (D1000, D100T or HDX) for the RV-12 or RV-12iS. It does not contain the device software or the latest set of aviation or other database updates. The system software and database updates should be downloaded from Dynon to ensure you are flying with current/accurate information. Note that before you update your Dynon system in your RV-12, you need to make sure you know which components are installed, as you will need to specify those during the setup and configuration. A step-by-step README file is included in this download.

If it's an S-LSA then I believe you need to wait for Van's; if it's an E-LSA then you can do it on your own.

Successfully made a test flight with the updated software installed. Emergency Glide worked and was easily enabled/disabled, but I wish it matched Garmin's Smart Glide in offering to squawk 7700.

Going to slap a placard on the panel about how to activate, primarily because I tried holding down Direct To instead of NRST the first time.

That was the case up until very recently. Van's has changed their documentation, and I have confirmed with support (got the replay today), that they no longer publish an "approved" version and therefore expect users to do a test flight after upgrading to ensure that whatever version you choose to download from Dynon is compatible.

SV-PRE-SETS-READ-ME Rev 21 still has one note in blue on page 4 that implies they do publish an approved version, but support said that is a mistake and replaced by the red WARNING text on page 1.

See the readme at https://www.vansaircraft.com/downloads/#RV-12-12iS for more info.
