Cowl Mockup

I will soon be ready for cowl fitting on my -14A build, but my engine delivery is still four months out. I will be getting an IO-390 A3B6 Lycoming through Van's. I am wondering if I could scrounge up a O-320/360 core case and crankshaft and use this for fitting/cutting the cowl. It seems like the main factor is the distance from the rear of the engine mount ears to the front of the crankshaft flange. Does anyone know if these dimensions are the same or different for each engine size? Are there other dimensions that matter? Has anyone tried this process?

I would strongly suggest you wait until you have the exact representation of the crank flange, properly mounted to the MM before trying this "experiment".

There may be others who have done it (successfully), and I'll let them chime in on their experience. But however far off you are in your "simulation", that misalignment will always be with you.

YMMV - and that's just my $.02 worth
