Cowl Hinge location again.

So it’s my understanding that the
1/8=0.125 Vans 0.115 hinge pin is for
Firewall to cowl at Top,Bottom and Side.
0.086 pin p/n AN257-P3 is for top to bottom cowl left and right.
So what is the 0.063 hinge for?
I have 3 of them 3’-0” long.

On my RV8, the little thin wires are for the gear leg fairing. The top cowl has the smaller diameter than 1/8 inch to help with the upper curve of the cowl

Like PhatRV said, it's for the MLG strut fairings. With the plane on its feet they have to be pretty flexible to get them fed into the hinge from the bottom up because the ground is in the way. If you went with a bigger hinge there I doubt if the pins would have the needed amount of give.

Also, for what it's worth, quite a few folks have had issues with the hinges along the bottom of the cowl cracking over time. On the RV7 Van's overhauled this design a while back to replace the hinges with a flange and screw/nutplate arrangement. Presumably the RV9 is the same.

The other option for the bottom cowl hinge is extruded type hinge. The eyes do not breake off like the standard rolled hinges.

MS20001P aluminum hinge is extruded. The closed hinge loops cannot be pulled apart. Furnished with hinge pin. Anodized finish.

That makes sense. Small hinges are for the leg firings.
I also went with new lower cowl firewall attachment.
