Hello. Looks like I will be moving there from an airpark in AZ. I would love to know how the flying is out there, places to go, to do, also any inputs on airparks and airports.
I can send my cell number via DM if anyone would like to chat. Thanks 🙏🏼

Dang sorry to see you go Rico. I believe I met you in SJN when you came over with the mogollon crowd. My pops lives in Mountain City, TN a mile away from 6A4. Cool little airport. Selling your property at Mogollon? I'll DM you

Anyone else here from or Tennessee flyer?
We moved to Tennessee in 2019, living in the area between Knoxville and Chattanooga. There are breakfast fly-ins most Saturdays in this area.

You don't say where in TN you are moving to. TN has three distinct divisions, east TN, from Bristol to the Cumberland Plateau, middle TN, centered on Nashville, then western TN, with Memphis as the hub. The 3 divisions (reflected by the 3 stars on the State flag) are distinctly different living and flying experiences.

In east TN there are airparks, but they are not near major metropolitan areas, and rural medical care can be lacking. The big cities have robust university based medical facilities, but the airports near the cities have long hangar waiting lists. I am hangar'd at a county run airport 45 minutes from home, and not my county airport (I'm still above 100 on the waiting list there).

Great Info, for the time being it will be a regular home in Murfreesboro or Tullahoma just to set grounds. Then in a year or so I will turn that into a rental and move to an airpark. Chatting with the local flyers I should learn where I should go as far as Airparks go. Sounds like I won't be taking my airplane since hangar or hangar space is not a thing, definitely not keeping it outside.
How is the flying in the area I mentioned? Fly outs? Good RV community? I fly in AZ and CA a lot. Lots of airports with restaurants on the field. Got the airpark group fly once a week and another group in northern Cali that we fly somewhere every Sat for breakfast.

Initially setting grounds in Murfreesboro or Tullahoma.
That is probably about as good as it gets in TN for RV flying. However, I don't think you will see as much organized flying as you are accustomed to. There are some flyin breakfasts within easy range of middle TN. Maybe you can connect with some informal groups of RV pilots. The breakfasts at Shelbyville and Winchester will be a good starting point.

We moved to Hensley Airpark (04TN) about 3 years ago. Near Greeneville and about 35 minutes drive to Johnson City. As John said, there is a fly-in breakfast every Saturday within about 100nm. There are currently two homes for sale at 04TN, both are asking more than $1M, also one lot on the market. Send me a DM if you want more information.

Regards,
Roy

A lot of TN is close to flying activity in KY, GA, or AL.
I just flew into Murfreesboro a couple weeks ago for a warbird fly-in. The 2/3 scale P-38 was there!

From Lexington, KY it was about an hour. Central Kentucky (what is just north of the border from Nashville/Murfreesboro) has Saturday breakfasts throughout Spring/Summer/Fall. A really good one is Lebanon-Springfield 6i2 the third Saturday of month and is less than half hour from Murfreesboro.

You are moving to a great area for flying!

Rico, I live in Murfreesboro. Certainly give me a PM when you get to the area. I will agree with all that has been posted; great area to fly. MBT can be a busy airport because of a very large collegiate flight program (my employer...). Shelbyville does a great breakfast on the 4th Saturday of the month. I just stepped down as the VP of that EAA chapter. Lebanon does their breakfast on the 5th Saturday of the month... so they hold them about quarterly. I have a hangar at MBT, it took almost exactly 2 years of waiting to get it. I'm building a -8 and I'm at the 90% complete, 90% to go phase. I hope to be done by the end of this year. Give me a shout when you're in the area.

I am liking to hear all that.

Seems like hangars are impossible anywhere in the country... sucks.

Lots of great flying in middle TN!!
Just saw two properties listed at TN96 just a couple miles east of where I'm at.
Property 1
Property 2
I have zero connection to either of these.
Prices are WAY higher than they used to be for what you get but as you are well aware, real estate in middle TN has gone crazy. Of course coming from CA you'll think they're a bargain 😜
88TN is a fly in community but being up on the plateau it's a ways from McMinnville or Tullahoma.
8TN2 is a fly in community SE of Shelbyville but I have zero info on it.
I believe TN14 by Eagleville is also a fly in community but you'd likely have to build.

Our Lebanon (M54) EAA chapter is quite active. Breakfast every 5th Saturday. Very active with Young Eagles (just passed the 10,000 mark). Quite a few of us in the chapter have different flavor RV's.

Location in middle TN puts you in a great spot to be a short hop away for places to fly. Here's a sampling:

Tullahoma KTHA is where the Beechcraft museum is at. You can fly in and park next to it.

Scott Municipal Airport (SCX)
Right next to Big South Fork National Rec Area if you're into camping or horse back riding. Over 100k acres in TN alone and joins the Daniel Boone National Forrest. Think of it as Smoky Mountains NP without the crowds.

Knoxville Downtown Airport (DKX)
Beautiful airport right on the river. 3 courtesy cars. Short drive to Calhouns for some good BBQ on the river.

Houston County (M93)
Park off the west end of the runway and a short walk to the Southernaire Motel for a great breakfast.

The Lodge
Rough River State Park Airport (2I3)
Falls of Rough, KY
Park the plane and walk to the lodge for breakfast or lunch.

Lambert’s Cafe
Sikeston Memorial Municipal Airport (SIK)
Sikeston, MO
Home of "the throw'd role".
Always a busy place but when you call from the airport they'll pick you up and bring you in the back door, always skipping the line.

Triple Tree, SC SC00
Surely you've heard of their famous fly ins throughout the year.
About a 1:20 flight will get you there.

Pick N Pig BBQ
Gilliam -McConnell Airfield , NC. (BQ1)
Fly in for some great BBQ on the airfield

This is just a small sampling of great places to fly from middle TN that are not too far away. Heck, you can fly non stop to OSH in an RV for about a 2 1/2 hour flight from middle TN.

Good luck with your move.
Get ready for slightly higher humidity 😝

Good to hear about great flying, I was a lil concerned. Another question, how about the Experimental aircraft registration? Here in AZ I pay $29 a year

A couple more stops for your middle TN list.......Moontown (3M5) is a grass field just across the AL-TN state line east of Huntsville that will transport you back to the 1950's at their breakfast on the third Saturday. They also have a very well attended annual fly-in. For a lake-side airport in the scenic lower Appalachian area of AL on the Tennessee River check out Guntersville (8A1) for their 2nd Saturday breakfast.

Say what? Don't be bringing any of those "ideas" this way. No such thing in TN.

Well, AZ doesn’t have sales, use tax. So $29 a year for state registration is nothing. Looks like I will have to pay well over 13k for bringing my airplane into TN. That seems crazy.

Please elaborate.
Tennessee has a 7% sales or use tax, on any article purchased or brought into the state. In addition, there's a local option tax that can range up to 2.75% that is applied to the first $3200 of the purchase price, or alternatively to the fair market value. The state is very thorough about collecting this, as the sales tax is the primary source of revenue. Some seek to avoid this by incorporating and/or registering out of state, however the collections agency will almost always eventually discover aircraft based in the state from the FAA's based aircraft database.

If you can prove to TN that you paid a sales tax in another state, then you pay the difference, if the tax where you came from is lower.
You're required to fill out TN Affidavit of Transfer when moving and basing an aircraft in TN. Like Don mentioned, TN will catch up to you and if you didn't pay the tax, penalties will be assessed. It's important to note that you're taxed on the actual value of the aircraft, not what it could potentially sell for. If you've kept your receipts for every part purchased during your build, and the sales tax was already paid on said part, you provide the evidence and no TN tax is paid since it was already paid when you purchased said part. I'm pretty sure Vans collects TN sales tax when they sell you a kit these days so when you complete your build, you're not double taxed.
I am not a tax professional but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once so do your own research.

I guess AZ is great doing $29 a year for aircraft. TN wants some real money.

We moved to Hensley a year ago. Aside from a community of amazing people, we have three real attributes: a 3,000' paved runway (not lighted), a 1,600' grass runway and great views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. We looked for a while to find the best airpark for us. We found it.

Totally agree that paying a sales and use tax on a big ticket item like an aircraft is not fun. The flip side is that it's one and done. We do not have a state income tax so the state gets its revenue from sales taxes. You consume, you pay. There are always worse situations out there. VA comes to mind where they charge you a "personal property tax" EVERY year for every car, boat, RV, horse trailer or airplane that you own. It's like you're paying a sales tax every year for something you already own. Lived there for 11 years.
According to AOPA, TN is considering a sales tax exemption on aircraft parts. The belief is that people avoid TN for paid work on their aircraft because of the way it's taxed. TN shops lose money because of this and as we know, we have the capability to overfly expensive states to get work done in more tax friendly states. Who knows when or if this will happen. One of the deep pocket aviation tax payers in TN is FedEx so when they ask for exemptions or exclusions to taxes, the governator usually listens. Just recently FedEx threatened to move their entire Memphis operation to Indianapolis if they didn't get a break on the fuel taxes they pay. They got the break, but who knows whether they'd actually spend the money to move. Obviously the governator blinked first. Money talks.

I just looked up my plane in the FAA registrations and couldn't find anywhere that states where the plane is based.

As part of the NPIAS system (National Plan of Integrated Airports System), many GA airports are required to list the aircraft based at their facilities. This is a password-protected database and isn't necessarily easily accessible to the general public. However, on the login page it specifically states that state aviation authorities are authorized to use and access, so any information listed is readily available to the Tennessee Treasury, and thus sales tax collectors. Airports outside this system (usually very small or very large) report their based aircraft directly as part of their inspections. See Based Aircraft Database

Sorry to hear about that.
Thanks for the thought but honestly I am looking for a airpark community that is active, friendly people, I like the social aspect of the airpark. Here at mine we are constantly going from one hangar to another, you ask for any help you get plenty of guys jumping in! I hope I can find some place like that .
