Canopy Removal, Tip Up

In going to fabricate a new instrument panel and of course have to remove the emergency canopy unlock tee handle.

What are the steps for removal and reinstallation?

Thanks so much

Brad

To remove the handle you will need to get up under the panel and:

1. Remove the split pin from the bolt at the forward end of the t- handle, then;
2. Remove the nut from the bolt, and remove the bolt.

It won't be a 5-minute job and it won't be without cursing.

This is of course assuming the person who built the plane followed the plans. You might find that the bolt is very difficult to remove as there is not a lot of room between the top of the bolt and the top skin on some aircraft.

EDIT - picture of plans inserted:

Thanks so much. Once the bolt is removed can the canopy then be removed? Will make installation of the new avionics easier.

You only have to disconnect the struts and pull the handle to remove the canopy.

A LOT of people modified this set-up in many ways, so you should get someone familiar with the tip-up canopy to inspect before you do anything.

I would recommend removing the canopy BEFORE removing the T-handle. It will be a lot easier to do it this way. You will need at least two people to lift the canopy up and out of the way - take your time and be careful as the geometry requires some fiddly antics.

If you do remove the canopy be sure to avoid placing your new equipment in the way of the the goose-neck hinges, it can get tight for space in places.
