C401J Molex Connector

I just started wiring my wings for the RV14 and found that the C401J Molex connector that inserts into the holder on the tip of the spar does not fit. The shape of the connector is larger and of a different shape.

What have you done to fix this? I am thinking of re-shaping the holder with a file to fit the connector. Is there another common solution?

Thanks

Can you post a picture of the Molex and wing tip cutout. Is it a 5 pin molex? What year is your wing kit?

We have been working on that wiring the past two days on our 14A. The drawing shows the connector from the wing wiring harness going in that hole. What we have discovered is the molex connector from the fuselage wiring harness snaps into that hole and the wing molex connector will then connect to that. There is a note on that on the drawing but the actual drawing doesn’t show this very well at all.

If I remember correctly one wing has 2 9 pins Molex and the other a 9 and 12. Since I had to add wiring (they were not set up for taxi and landing in each wing plus pitot heat return ground missing and some shields not present) I think I had converted to a 15-pin connector so just zip tied the connectors together. The "holders" in the wings, stick grips and elevator trim are a little over complicated in my opinion and although "neat", not value add.

Make sure you have the number of wires needed before spending time modifying the "holders".

Here are some pictures of the connector and the holder on the outboard end of the left wing spar.

You have the two molex connected together. Carefully separate the connector without the wings. There are little clips on each side that you have to carefully pry out and then pull apart. Make sure it’s good and warm. The one with the wires in it will then clip into the cutout. The “wings” will fold back as you insert it and have a notch in them that will click in place. Make sure that one’s good and warm also.
Never mind…I see you’re in Florida:cool:
Keep other half for your light wiring.

I just got off the phone with Vans. It is just like you posted Todd. Before I could insert the plug, I had to remove the cap, which is used for the wiring from the lights. I didn't realize that the connector was actually two parts.

Thanks everybody for your input. Hopefully, this post will help somebody like me in the future.

Another issue with the molex you may run in to is at the wing root. The original molex part #03-09-2091 used for C-400P is obsolete. So vans has a note on the drawing that mounting clips are on the WH-00125 harness. Except those clips on the WH-00125 don’t hold it secure. The connector is smaller and doesn’t fit in the cutout very well. You can either proseal it in place, when the time comes, or order some Molex 03-09-2091 from Farmtronics which have 10 in stock.

You may be able to find some in the US by searching that part #. Good luck

If you’re gonna order some, get extra cause I think you’ll need them for the other wing.
