I didn't want to know how long or how much I spent, all I knew was that it was "more than I'd planned"
I just took hundreds of timestamped pictures along the way, many of them for purposes of note-taking (how does this go together, what did I do there, etc) or updating Dad on my progress. I also kept a selection of google docs with part numbers, notes, etc. My DAR just asked for a selection of the pictures.
When I went to the FSDO for the Repairman cert they didn't even ask me anything; they just filled out the paperwork and issued the temporary certificate. "The DAR said you built it" I was told; I guess that wa good enough for him. I spent a lot more time talking to them about what I used to do at my old job than about my airplane...
