Beringer Brakes and Rudder Connection

I have Beringer brakes in my 14A. Red cylinders on the pedals. All very nice kit.

But, my left rudder will not go all the way to the stop. How does this relate to the brakes you ask?

Turns out the heim joint for the Beringer cylinders on the right rudder pedals interfere with the horizontal rudder pedal support tube.

Anybody else having this issue? Or, did I goof up assembly somehow?

I think the solution is making the cable stays for the rudder cables longer, thereby moving the both rudder pedals closer to the firewall. This should move the heim joint farther from the horizontal pedal support when the right pedal moves aft, thereby not contacting the horizontal pedal support and allowing the rudder to move to full stop on the left. I wish I had a photo. It would have saved all that confusing rhetoric.

I looked at it yesterday.
Scott has the same issue as Brian (bertschb) posted above.
It looks just like the photo he posted on his thread.
Apparently, Vans designed the weldment for a different style of master cylinders. The passenger right brake master cylinder Heim (forward weldment) hits the aft weldment just shy of full left rudder. Brian's fix was to make longer links so the weldments are more forward.
Another option for those with weldments not installed, is to cut the mount off and weld one slightly lower.

Adjustments to the rudder cables should fix it, at least if the rudder pedals are in the the middle position. I have no interference in this position. Also, you might consider moving the spacer/bushing to the other side of the top rod end so that the master cylinder is not applying pressure on the weldment at an angle. Vic Syracuse has reported broken weldments on older planes due to the tabs stressed at an angle.

I fabricated new cable stays 5” long. The originals are 3-1/4”. When my rudder cables were attached to the farthest aft holes I got interference between the heim joint on the right pedals and the horizontal torque tube. Moving the cables back 1” using the longer stays solved the issue. Of course my pedals are 1” closer to firewall, but I get full travel, now. I tried one hole further forward for cable attachment and the heim barely cleared the torque tube, so I moved the cables back one hole. 1” seems right for my build.

Of course, now I need some of those spiffy pedal extensions from Aerosport! No more riding the brakes on taxi!!

What did you mean by “the middle position”?
