B&G AVC1 regulator - or what?

Almost a year ago when I would press my PTT button the Voltage would start going down to 12 volts and the Amps would start climbing toward 6, 7, amps. The radio had lots of noise. When I released the PTT everything was fine. This also happened twice without pressing the PTT button. I thought it was the regulator and sent it to B&C to check it out.

They sent me a new regulator, not telling me what was wrong with the old one. Everything worked fine, until yesterday. Same thing happening again. Both the PTT buttons cause the same problem. I’ve swapped out the radio and it’s not the radio. I’ve checked and cleaned all the grounds I could get to. When I first changed out the regulator to the new B&C regulator, I put a much larger air tube onto it for cooling and led it to the air chamber in front of the water radiator, so I’m sure heating can’t be a problem.

Everything so far seems to lead back to the Voltage Regulator.

Anyone have an idea about this?

Does radio noise vary with engine speed?
Do these symptoms (volts down, amps up, radio noise) happen when PTT is pushed and the engine is stopped (alternator offline)?
