Another electro air question

I'm having trouble getting the timing ring to fit on the front of the crankshaft. There is not enough room to slide it forward off the engine block to get access for the magnetic pickup. Anyone else run into this issue? IO 540

Make sure the rounded shoulder of the ring halves is forward.
