AN470 rivet direction

This is super basic so I may have missed something I should have picked up. I am on page 07-05, step 2, riveting various parts to the R-902 spar. For universal head rivets, if the plans don't specify which sides get the factory/shop heads, are we free to pick the sides that make things easiest? For example, the side with the most room probably gets the factory head so there is room for the rivet gun. I understand that flush rivets are direction-sensitive and the plans will probably call out the direction if not obvious. I would have probably asked this question on an early page but I messed something up on the vertical stab before I got to the riveting stage.

Yes.However, if they are visible, generally the factory head is the visible one. Structurally, it's not an issue at all.

As others have mentioned, factory on thinnest material, but as the strength is the same, it's convenient to have the factory on the easiest side to drill. Not that I've ever had to drill one ( or a hundred). 😆
