Aerosport NACA servo and controller

I have the NACA servo and controller and from day one it’s sort of worked but not very well. Recently I’ve checked it and it’s not working. Has anyone come up with a better system than what Aerosport provides to control the two butterfly valves via the servo?

Would be interested also. Mine works but it continually makes a noise like it’s seeking a position despite no turning of the knob. Instructions says this is normal but seems like it will fail sooner rather than later operating like this.
Fellow RV10 owner has already replaced two of these

Interesting feedback and ideas. I had planned to install the aerosport valve as I get further along on my build, but definitely rethinking this.

I did a little research and basically, there is a little circuit board that is sending a "PWM" signal to the servo to set the angular location. That PWM signal is probably where the noise is coming from. A possible solution would be to add an "on/off" switch to the controller/servo. It would require flipping the switch to "on", then adjusting the potentiometer dial the adjust the PWM signal to the servo, then switching it "off".

Maybe not ideal, but it may minimize the noise and also preserve the servo and controller, pending what is actually failing.
 
Just a data point. I have the Aerosport valve with a PWM controller and have not had any issues in 500 hours.

That said, I spent some time with it on the bench, before it was installed, to make sure that the end points were not stalling the servo. I also changed the nylon clevis ends to DuBro ball links similar to what is used on model helicopter running gear, and made sure there was no binding in the linkage.
 
I only use the valve to stop the overhead console from being pressurized up high or in winter. So open or closed is fine. I don’t see the need for a variable valve there. If you’re using the overhead ventilation then the ball valves are sufficient for airflow regulation.
I flew around for a year with no valve in the back at all, but the cold air leaking out all the little gaps in the overhead for the lights/ball valves/ox/switch pod etc finally got to me.
 
I’m going to go another route. Because I have the NACA duct already I’m going to abandon the servo PWM controller. As Richard noted the valves only need to be on or off. I’m going to adapt a micro linear actuator and a double throw momentary contact switch to either have it open or closed. This should eliminate fiddling with the PWM / servo. I’ll post a picture when I get this done.
 
I used one of these. Auto HVAC. Cheap and light.
Pretty straightforward. All it needs is a DPDT switch wired appropriately.
