Airport layout and hangar locations

Hey gang, Stead airport is buzzing with race fever, and the BBQ is taking shape nicely. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the show!

Thought I'd put out a little diagram to dovetail with the pics Mike and Greg posted, to help everyone find the BBQ and a couple of our hangars.

Below is a quicky layout that shows where Dan's hangar, Greg's hangar and my hangar is in relation to the pits and the grandstands.

stead.jpg

As you can see (and was mentioned earlier), Dan and Greg's hangars are on the NW side of the pits, and beyond the "dead line" (a no-cross line during the races that runs E-W just N of the pits...and is just S of Dan's hangar). Their hangars can be walked to after the races are concluded each day, and a pit pass is not required to get there after the races stop each day (though I highly recommend a pit pass for full enjoyment of the races and up-close viewing of the racers!). You'll see Dan and Greg's tan hangars out close to the runway to the left of show center and the pits when facing the runway.

My hangar is outside the pits, just west and south of the main grandstands and the shopping area (lots of cool booths there). To get to it, if you are walking toward the east pit entry adjacent to the grandstand, turn left before you get to the pit gate, and walk behind the large flightline-front hangar at the pit gate, and go to the second row of hangars behind it. My hangar is the middle hangar in that second row, and there is a large motor home parked in front of it. You're welcome to stop by any time, use it as a rally point, or stash stuff in the hangar if needed.

Give a holler when you're out there, and we'll make a party of it all week long! My cell is (775) 544-3511. I'll let Dan and Greg post their numbers if they'd like to. See ya there!

Cheers,
Bob

Section 3?

Hey Bob,
Your map doesn't show Section 3!
Oh, I forgot, once you get to Stead, you don't really need a map to find Section 3. Those who have been there know what I mean.
I can't make it this year, but I'll be wearing my Section 3 T-shirt on Saturday!
Share some photos with us. :)

Anyone needing to call me can reach me (sometimes) on my cell.

775-762-7550

I'll certainly be around on Saturday, but maybe not hear the phone over the engine noise....

greg

After going to the races today, I found they have put up another pit fence and gate right at my hangar row. So my hangar now is actually on the wrong side of the fence...yikes! Draw a line from the square hangar above my hangar row in the diagram to my hangar row, and that's where it's at.

If you have a pit pass, no worries, you can walk right to it. If you don't either call me, or see if you can talk your way in, by saying you are visiting my hangar. If you call me, I should be able to escort you to the hangar. Either way, we'll figure it out!

Good prelim shows and warm-up heats today, and the Blues did their airborn site survey today as well...means they flew all over the area for quite a while, which was fun to watch

Things should heat up tomorrow, with loads of flying, and many photo ops.

Sorry about leaving out Section 3...just look for the orange shirts...or just listen for the loudest crowd noise! :)

Cheers,
Bob

Sorry to miss the party and races this year. Had to work out of town and can't make it back in time. I will be there in spirit though....

Have a great time guys!

A few pics

Nice day at the races today...perfect weather for racing and watching the show!

Had a few RVers by the hangar today, and had the chance to see "Rodoc" Dave's beautiful rotary powered RV-6 (N4VY) that is in Greg Arehart's hangar for the week. Also met Ed, the Cassut Formula racer and RV-4 builder that I discovered did the original wiring on my airplane (small world!). Ran by the formula hangar to see if we could find Sam (OX) and Ross, but missed them.

Grabbed a few pics, and more to follow as the weekend continues. Looking forward to seeing more VAF'ers, and a great R3 BBQ!

Here's a few pics to whet the appetite:

Blues put on a great show:

I'll grab some more, and try to get some of the VAF folks that come by, and post them as I do.

Cheers,
Bob

Awesome pictures!

What a fabulous photo of the Blues! We look forward to joining the fun and seeing you tomorrow.

More Blues...and a Red RV

What a fabulous photo of the Blues! We look forward to joining the fun and seeing you tomorrow.

Louise...I was really lucky on that one. We found a spot on the fence right in front of a ground unit the Team had set up out on the ramp, that looked like a little weather and telemetry station. After the show we figured it was the mark they flew over as show center. Not sure if they use some sort of telemetry these days, but they were coming right at us when that pic was snapped, and flew over that mark several times.

Here's another shot of the diamond...another of my faves. I don't think the boys will have any trouble getting their F.A.S.T. cards when the time comes! ;)

rardiamond.jpg

Last week the Blues flew a show out at NAS Fallon, then repositioned to Stead for the races (and a visit to Hook...the Tailhook Symposium that takes place in Reno the week before the races each year).

Last Saturday, after flying some Navy bros (also visiting for Hook), and gassing up the RV, the jets were out on the ramp, so I asked the temp tower and the Air Guard ground crew (who was setting up some safety equipment) if I could park downline and take a couple pics. Got a thumbs-up, so though we stayed well clear (no touching!) we were able to snap a couple pics of the RV and the Blues. Kinda fun (and brings the thread back to RV-centric)!

rocketsixandtheblues.jpg

We'll get some racer pics and people pics to post as well, as I know that folks want to see some "Fly Fast, Fly Low, Turn Left" stuff too!

And Chad...we're holding your chair open for you...and a cold one in front of it, just as if you were here...next year for sure! :)

Cheers,
Bob

Thanks, guys!

What a wonderful evening! Thank you, guys, for organizing and executing such a fine, relaxed gathering. We had a really nice time. Special thanks to Greg and Julia Arehart for picking up the cake and ice cream for us to celebrate Paul's birthday. It was a very nice conclusion to a fun and interesting day (in a fabulous part of the country)!

Another good time

Thanks for doing this again guys. Met some new folks. Good food, conversation, beer and all with a great view. Who could ask for more? See you next year.

Debbie and I would like to extend our thanks for an enjoyable get-together yesterday, and the opportunity of meeting a great group of fellow aviators.

Another thankyou...

This is from Bill Letcher, a friend & our local EAA president, Chapter 23 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He isn't presently subscribed to this forum.

Anyway........ He called and wanted to thank everyone for the great time they had last evening!

Personally, I figure that if he likes this event as much as he did........then he'd like LOE too... :)

I'm including a couple of pics of Bill's RV9A. He wants to show them to a few people he talked to. The first is the panel without the full Classic Aero interior installed.

Thanks

Thanks to all who attended the BBQ Sat night, we had a great time.

High point for me was having Paul "Ironflight" Dye give our 14 year old some tips about what it takes to get into NASA-----which is his current dream.

Thanks Paul, I owe you one.

Also, the Birthday Cake and ice cream-------Louise sprang a bit of a surprise on Paul.

Best guestimation of attendance is somewhere 60 ish, give or take a few.

Good food, Good folks, Fantastic weather.

See you all next year.

Great Time

What a fantastic opportunity to meet Greg, Bob, Don and so many great guys last week. Thanks for the hospatality to me and all the RV community. I expected that I would really enjoy the Reno Air races, and I was not dissapointed. You guys made it all that much better.

For anyone who has not been.... it is a must do. See you next year!

Lots of fun for the hour we were able to make it for. Had as much fun in that time, as all week with my team!

BBQ

Sounds like "Piece Of Grass West". Sure wish I could have been there.

I qualified and got my race card in '75 for Biplanes, but didn't get to race. I see Tom Aberle is still kicking biplane butt!

I see Tom Aberle is still kicking biplane butt!

OMG, yes!!!

It was totally amazing to watch him from a start in row 2--or 3?--and then go past the rest of the field like they were in reverse.

This was not a race, it was a massacre.

By the way, the prop was reported to be worth something like an extra 35 MPH all by itself, and it is built by a member of this forum.

BBQ and Race Pics

Here are a few more pics from the races and the R3 BBQ. Will probably take a few posts to get them all in, but I hope you enjoy them. By the way, Boom3, your pics are awesome...nicely done!

It was great meeting and spending time with so many RV'ers! Thanks for coming to the BBQ, and for stopping by my hangar during the races. The people positively made race week! Let's do it again next year for sure!!

First a few of the races and some racers (I'll see if I can get most classes represented):

I believe this is the way-fast bipe you are referring to above:

BBQ and Race Pics 2

More race pics:

Gotta have a Corsair in here!

Silver Winner, Miss America:

Gold Winner, Strega, shot from the Valley of Speed (with a 22 yr old pilot at the controls!) Not sure what the winning speed was in the final, but he ran 511 mph on Saturday! Heard that second place finisher Rare Bear (after VooDoo had to mayday out) was running a stock engine and prop this year, so next year, if everyone gets fully up and running, we may have some incredibly fast racing (and it wasn't too shabby this year!):
rarstrega2.jpg

The view from over in the Valley of Speed (the stretch just before the final turn, where the racers often run very low and very, very fast). Pretty neat view of the race venue across the valley...and Section 3 is recognizable in orange, even from way over there!:

Reno Photos

Here is a link to some of the photos we took at Reno.

Hope you enjoy them. I tried to keep it short, only 99 of the 700+ photos that we got.

Imax??

I heard that the boom/camera setup in this photo is an Imax setup. These folks were all over the place, getting a lot of shots.

Reno in Imax??

Sure hope so, what a film experience that would be!!

DSC04399.jpg

Anybody out there able to confirm ???

It is true Mike. I saw this at www.hollywoodreporter.com

Sept 13, 2009, 06:59 PM ET

3D Entertainment has acquired distribution rights to "Air Racers 3D: Forces of Flight," produced by Los Angeles-based Pretend Entertainment and Stereoscope. It will be released in Imax 3D and 2D theaters in the U.S. next fall.

The film, which follows rookie pilot Steve Hinton Jr. as he prepares for the Reno National Championship Air Races, is just beginning principal photography.

"Just eight days after announcing our first acquisition for Imax 3D theaters, 'Sea Rex 3D,' we are extremely pleased to add this exciting new film, which will be the first non-aquatic title in our film catalogue, to our 2010 lineup," said Francois Mantello, chairman and CEO of 3D.

"Racers" is being produced by Pretend and Stereoscope in association with the Reno Air Racing Association. Roger Tonry, known for his extensive experience in aerial and aviation photography, will direct. Christian Fry and Bernie Laramie will serve as producers with John Constantine, Raul Leckie and Jeffery Pierce as exec producers.

Thanks for the nice comment Bob! Great pictures yourself, and a great summary.

Yep, one of my friends is directing it. Should be darn good, given the people doing the filming are aviators as well. :).
