Here’s what I posted on Facebook:
160hp O-320, fixed pitch Catto prop [Catto now. It had a Sensenich when I owned it]. It has bigger than standard wheels & tires… 6.00x6 if I remember correctly. Gets in and out of grass strips very nice with the bigger tires. Still got about 190mph out of it.
Built by Richard Pedersen in the Denver area and first flew in 1983 if I remember correctly. Doesn’t have any of the Van’s wing spar modifications [MIGHT be done now. See Oly’s post, above], but the spar was modified in a different manner pursuant to a study conducted by a Denver school that was based at KBJC. Also as part of their analysis and solution, they determined that the wing needed to be a little longer for an 8,000’ optimal cruise altitude. The wing and the spar mod were incorporated into the original build, so nothing looks tacked on.
There used to be a letter from Van himself in the records discussing the wing modifications. I didn’t fly it to the Land of Enchantment fly in at Las Cruces, but I talked with Van about the plane in 1999 [might’ve been 1998?] when I drove to the fly-in. He remembered the plane and spoke very positively about the quality of the build. I believe he said he actually flew the plane at some point.
When I had the plane, there were no wing tanks, so just a 24 or 25 gallon header tank. The paint was what you see in these pics… 1980’s color scheme, but it was great quality so I wouldn’t be in any hurry to change it. I’m pretty sure the N number stickers have been changed since I owned it. I always joked that it was A&W colors. (If anybody is old enough to remember A&W restaurants) All of this is from my memory and ownership of the plane in 1998-99.
I bought the plane as a time-builder and put 145 hours on it in the year I owned it. When I landed a job with Mesa Airlines, I was instantly too poor to own an airplane!
