Anyone use ground adjustable prop? Buddy of mine has one on his Legend MOAC Cub and he likes it. I don't want the mx associated with CS Prop.

Catto is making a new series of ground adjustable props for Lycomings (among others). You should reach out to them to understand what they have for your RV-8.

My performance numbers with the Sensenich ground adjustable propeller:

If you’re looking to buy a prop I’ve got a 3 blade GT ground adjustable prop I’d like to sell. 26 hours on an 0-360 Glastar. Like new, wasn’t the best prop for a heavy slow airplane.

Thanks guys. Will do more research. Went to Catto website. Pitch range is between 76 -78 degrees on their 2blade prop. Did not realize difference between climb/cruise is that small. Figured it would be a bit larger pitch range.

I was at Oshkosh looking for the Catto booth in 2024. I ended up on the phone with one of the principal players who was at Oshkosh, but didn’t have a booth. I asked about a ground adjustable 3 bladed prop. They basically said we have X, Y & Z. Take it or leave it. Their business is focused on the Cub/STOL industry.

I ended up buying the DUC carbon fiber ground adjustable IMG_7327.jpeg

I have 3 different brands of GA props, all on low and slow types. None of them are on my RV so take this with a grain of salt.

While the idea is great in that you can pretty much fine tune the prop to your mission, the idea of changing the pitch differently for each different flight mission becomes more fantasy than reality in my opinion. Maybe if you do it frequently, time to do it will become less and less, but I've come to the set it and forget it mindset.

I will say that the very light weight of these props is great. Spool up is much quicker when trying to arrest the decent on a short strip landing.

I am intrigued by the E-props new ground adjustable for the Lycomings. I seriously thought about buying one, but ultimately decided to let some other people get a few thousand hours on them before I put one on mine. I know several Rotax guys who swear by them, but that is an entirely different animal.

I asked Catto about a 3 blade ground adjustable last year for an RV, and they weren’t producing one yet. Hopefully one is in development. After a lot of discussion, I went with their 2B GA prop as it aligned with my current need. That said, they have been a fixture in the RV community for many years producing a range of props for the RV series of aircraft supported by impeccable customer support. There are a ton of RV’s flying behind Catto Props. They are constantly testing and developing propellers across different airframes and power plants. The accelerating interest in the Rotax 916 has in itself created a lot of R&D. Having been in their shop, I definitely wouldn't pigeonhole them as being focused on the Cub/STOL market.

I repitched when flying west into the Rockies and repitched to fly back east. It worked and I’d do it again. I don’t repitch every day but Sensenich repitch takes 30 mins.

Obviously my information is coming up on 2 years old. But this info is straight out of the mouth of one of the family members that runs Catto.
