RV-12 Arizona Oil Temp

chadrees

I'm New Here
I have read multiple threads about this topic and have some wonderful ideas of what I can do. But wanted to list this out here and see if anyone has more input before I start investing.

I live in Arizona and our summer has started early. I am a new RV-12 owner, with a 2012 RV-12 ULS. 715TT. I brought the RV-12 down from the PWN and had a wonderful cross country home. Now that the summer heat is rolling in I have had trouble climbing above 3000 AGL. As I climb my oil temp quickly gets to 235-240. Leveling off treads it back down to the 228, descents I am seeing 210-200.

I can do 100 FPM climb at 70 but boy does it take forever to get to an altitude with good air, and by that time I am either having to start looking for refueling options.

Several things I have read

  • Wrap exhaust tank with heat tape/muffler tape.
  • Use Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50 oil (better for higher temp operations?
  • Re-pitch propeller (e-prop tri-blade) for better climb performance (Currently pitched for cruise)
  • Modify oil cooler to be further from exhaust (Fiber glass work)
  • Modify air inlet (cutting lower portion for better air during climb) - (I have only seen one mention of someone doing this)
  • Upgrade to the EX-00044 exhaust relocation kit
  • Use 100LL vs mogas (apparently 100LL has lower temp effects on oil in high temp operations)
Any other suggestions or comments on those listed above, for which works best is GREATLY appreciated. I fly daily and really cant be grounded for all of summer.

Check your PMs.

Using synthetic Mobil 1 Racing 4T is good for high heat. Modifying lower cowling to move oil cooler 1” forward solved elevated oil temps during hotest summer days NE Ohio. Modification is not difficult to do. Search my posts for photos…

Do you have any photos of the modification you did for the lower cowling?
