OAT probe location

I know I want to put it out of the engine exhaust and slipstream. Has anyone put it in the back ie near the rudder or horizontal stab area of the fuse?

I am adding this component late in the build and don’t want to have to route these wires to the front.

Yes. Tried it on an 8A and a 10. Both times the probes read high and I had to move them.

Save yourself the trouble and mount it near the first inspection access on a wing. I run a single, four #22 conductor shielded wire to connect both OAT probes (I have two SkyView ADHARS modules located in the fusleage aft of the cockpit). This single shielded wire is much easier to run than four separate wires.

Advantage of running an older engine, I can see where exhaust flows under the belly. Oil residue & exhaust soot track out to the right side of the tail cone, so I mount OAT high under the left horizontal. I get accurate readings.

Mounted to the outboard inspection plate nearest the pitot tube. Connector so it can be easily removed although I usually just tuck the panel back inside the wing.

I’m our RV’s, we’ve got 1 under the wing outboard of the inspection covers, one on the side of the tail under the HS, and one in the underwing NACA scoop (RV-8). All read very close to each other (both-checks in formation over the years) and within a degree of other temperature sources. TAS and winds all accurate. The Rocket has it out on the wing, outboard of the inspection covers (I hate having inspection covers hanging by wires because things are mounted on them…personal preference….)

I was going to go the inspection cover route, but the wire supplied with the OAT probe wasn't long enough. So I put it on the bottom side of the wing root fairing instead. Works fine. Just another possibility.
