RV12is kit prices

pparke

I'm New Here
I was thinking about building an Rv12is and was looking at the order form and pricing. What I am confused about is the price of the motor and accessories at 47k. I saw that the motor can be purchased for around 24k from another source. Is there really 23k worth of parts to justify. What I saw included was the radiator, oil cooler, hoses, motor mount, wiring harness and battery. Are these parts available from somewhere else? Again, I am new at this but want to make sound decisions.

Thanks, Parker

There are quite a few more special parts and don’t forget the prop and exhaust. Many of those parts are proprietary to Vans.

Also if you are planning E-LSA, you have no choice but to buy it all from Vans and follow their design. If you are going E-AB, you can do what ever you want.

I am over $150K in at this point for an 12-IS with wheel pants, dual screen VFR Garmin with AP and AP control head. That does not include paint. Don’t forget about consumables, any upgrades to the interior, shipping and sales tax. I just looked and the PP kit has 5 full pages of items listed. The engine itself is just one of those line items.

Very few ways to cut cost out of a 12-IS built as an E-LSA. If budget is an issue, I recommend you buy a used one that is airworthy.

Sounds like great advice! BTW I looked at your blog and it looks great what a nice job. I think I might be able to build one with that kind of guidance.

I don't know much about LSAs as I haven't previously considered building one. I was under the impression S-LSA is inflexible with regard to changes and E-LSA is essentially like E-AB. Did I get something mixed up?

S-LSA must remain as original! E-LSA may be modified after original certification as long as the mod does not remove the aircraft from LSA parameters.

SLSA can only be modified with approval by the manufacturer (yes that's pretty inflexible). ELSA must be built per mfgr's instructions, identical to SLSA, but can be modified after construction. E-AB can be modified during construction and after, without approval by kit manufacturer.

@Brantel can you share this resource? I'm building and want to know what upgrades are available. For example, I just learned about the lighting kit in the store as it's not available on the kit order form.

Most upgrades are listed on the new web page style order forms. Not sure why the lighting kit is not there because it used to be on the PDF order form for the wing kit.

The Power Plant Kit pages I referred to above are the packing list of items that come with the kit along with the engine.
The options for the power plant kit are limited to either a 2 or 3 blade prop and whether or not you want Rotax Care added to the order. The Rotax Care must be added at the time of order in the USA.

If you are on a budget, ask Van’s about their 45k$ plane. At least it should be possible according to their FAQ :p

I However fail to find a metal Kit that is below 45k. Maybe its only a Motor with prop and wheels?

Unless I'm mistaken, the lighting kit is now a standard part of the wing kit. It was eliminated as an option when Van's reorganized and streamlined their kitting process.

I haven’t added up the cost to build a RV-12 lately…. but I bet shipping costs would be astronomical

If you order the base kits with no add-ons today, a single panel Skyview RV-12iS will run just over $131k before shipping.

You can also keep your eye out for a kit that has been partially constructed and is for sale. I bought an RV-12iS kit (less power plant and avionics kits) that was partially constructed. I had to order parts to totally build a new vertical stabilizer and stabilator due to damage. I also had to order several SB's the most expensive were the updated nose gear and engine mount. The aircraft is complete and flying now with the Garmin IFR avionics package and the 912iS engine. I have a little less than $140K in it. That includes what I paid the original builder and the kits and parts that I bought including shipping and sales tax (8% in Texas).
