Hi we are going to visit Norfolk (airlines) for a few days to visit the Civil War Museums. Any RV friendly airports to visit? Or suggestions on sites to see?
Thanks Bob.
(I had great response from the New Zealand folks thought Id try VA)
Sorry my bad on spelling.

Check out the Military Aviation Museum in VB (Pungo). I know of a few RVs at CPK.
+1. Also the Mariners Museum is wildly underrated in my view, the Monitor exhibit is superb. If you get as far as Richmond, the Civil War museum is excellent. Cold Harbor battlefield is quite small but fascinating.

KCPK EAA 339 has:
  • Pancake breakfasts 4th Saturdays 0830 except December, KCPK hangar Indigo 3.
  • Monthly meeting 1st Tuesdays 1930, KCPK terminal building.
AFAIK at KCPK there are:
  • RV-6
  • RV-6A
  • RV-7
  • RV-9A
  • RV-12 x 2
  • RV-14A

+1 for the Aviation Museum and Mariners Museum, also Yorktown is about an hour up the road, and the Revolutionary War museum is there as well. Also, not sure what food you like, but there is a place in Norfolk called Mr. Schwarma, ate there almost every day when I was there for JPME.

Hampton Roads (KPVG) is a great spot and a very active airport. Recommend staying away from Norfolk Intl (KORF) unless you like high fees and expensive gas. Definitely visit KFFA while you are in the area!!

My main reason is to see the USS Monitor! Wow lots to do many thanks to all.
You will love it. They may still have the turret out of the bath for testing/inspection. The rest of the museum is also interesting.

Oh and the Wisconsin battleship tour in downtown Norfolk is great! Pay the extra bucks for the backstage tour if offered.

KJGG is a great spot in Williamsburg. Best airport sandwiches around. Likely to see an RV or two as well. On your way back is Yorktown, and nearby battlefields as well as VA war museum which has a ton of artifacts (but no outstanding theme or display) and the Yorktown museums focus way more on Revolutionary war but you can still see some Civil war earthworks scattered throughout the adjacent Newport News park.

If you are already a Signature customer, the above does not apply as gas is discounted and some fees are waived. Since my grandkids are in VB, I fly to ORF often. Much more convenient ground travel than the perimeter fields which I used 10+ years ago before trying ORF. Good service at ORF from both tower and FBO.

Well I stand corrected: I am happy to hear that things may have improved at KORF for GA. If you do choose Norfolk International Airport please take a moment to enjoy the adjacent Norfolk Botanical Garden (NBG). We lived within walking distance of KORF for almost two years while I was trapped in LPD17, and we went to the garden almost daily with my son because it’s such a great place. Worth your time for sure!

Tagging Martin Hill,
Fridays KJGG airport cafe runs a "special" on the menu.
Good food, and good folks.
