Organizing your hardware

LOL...works if you don't have a lot of hardware to deal with...She has done some interesting things over the last several years.

Always decanted the brown bags.

It is an afternoon with some toons on and a beer.......

Once everything as done as best as you can, you need a drawer labelled Weird Sh1t !

When you are scoring your stores for something on the plans....... It will likely be in that drawer

Those are so modern.
I still use old school organization methods.
I love it, that makes me so nostalgic for my grandpas' shops, though they also had a good number of Maxwell House and General Foods International Coffees tins mixed in with the Folgers.

I had started buying the Milwaukee Jobsite organizers, but they decided to discontinue them. Haven't found anything else that works as well as they did. All the stuff I've found these days, has some kind of fixed divider in them and it messes with using two different bin sizes, efficiently. Will probably convert over to Lista or Vidmar cabinets this next year.

Maybe take a look at Allit boxes while you're at it, they have the kind of multiple-size bin inserts I think you're after.

Lots of solutions. I also inventories the bags. I have five (40 drawer) bins from Harbor Fright. Bolts, Nuts, etc. Oddball stuff went into the big bottom drawer unless it was too big. That stuff went into a storage bin. Every item got a location on my inventory spreadsheet.
Rivets all stored in 8oz water bottles.
Never had a problem finding anything.

I kinda blew past using the portable boxes earlier this year. Quick check shows I'm well past 400 part numbers for just bolts, screws and nuts stocked so far, for the current projects. Most of it's still in bags, all tossed in totes til the storage stuff gets worked out.

I guess I need to up my game! To be fair, this is all "extra" hardware I've ordered from Vans or ACS.

I keep the hardware that comes in the kits in the original bags in sequential order.

Once I'm done with my build, I'll remove everything from the bags, consolidate like hardware and make it look nice and purdy. Maybe not as fancy as @mburch or @Phil Sprang but still better than a pile of bags.

From Van's Year end update.

I wonder if they left room for snacks?

"RV-15 builders are the first customers to receive our new “RV Tackle Box” hardware organization. Over time, we intend to roll this organization method out to our legacy kits as well. "

"The RV-15 wing kits come with hardware organized in "tackle boxes" to make finding what you want so much simpler. QR codes lead you to our comprehensive webstore for replacements."

Did you add a QR code legend at the bottom of plans so builder can scan and go right to the designated "tackle box"?
I assume there's more than one.
You're welcome.

I would imagine they are mostly separated by hardware type so that would not really be necessary. Even if it were, I think the plans could just directly reference a box #/ID and not need to involve a code and a phone.

My favorite so far for the small hardware stuff is bead boxes. I'm too clumsy for anything that can spill, especially with the possibility of spilling more than one thing at a time. Aside from just working from the Van's bags (which I didn't really mind), my basic requirement has been that everything goes in its own container with a closing lid. In prep for the -15 build I have been looking at alternatives to the bead boxes and didn't find anything great, so I was printing up various gridfinity containers to 'audition'. Since Van's has gone the extra mile on the tackle box setup I'm going to back off on my old rules and take the spill risk.

Just an idea. I hated the bags. O inventoried and used 40-drawer bins.
Rivets went into 8oz water bottles. Blind Rivets in medicine bottles.

By the way... if anyone needs medicine bottles let me know. I have a lot.
Send an email.

Hint: if your bins have clear fronts, use the labels that are white on clear. They'll show up fine and you can still see the hardware inside.

I like the old Equipto type boxes. I scrounge for them on Craigs list. Not pretty but very functional. Last for ever.

Anybody know the size of a tackle box and how many there are? I'd like to buy racks that they can be stored in like Durham manufacturing has. Use the Durham racks now with flambeau boxes. Nice crystal clear.. https://flambeaucases.com/collectio...ducts/a-series-6680cb-a824-24-compartment-box

Mine are Virginia Gold tobacco tins. Can't bring myself to throw them away, too many memories working with my father in the garage on some project or another.
