WDYDWYRTW? Oct 18-19, 2025

While not technically the weekend.... Friday is MY weekend so I changed the oil and took care of a few loose ends, then went for a 1.0 over my old stomping ground of Tofino BC where I spend a few years of my career flying floats. It was a beauitful fall day!

I went to breakfast this morning before the winds came up. I’m working on getting my new Garmin G5s and GMU11 AHRS dialed in. The GS, TAS, IAS, and wind vectors aren’t lining up. I’m researching the forum re: how to test the pitot & static systems for leaks as well as how to properly compare ground speed runs to TAS indications. I’m also wondering if the perfectly flush static ports might be inducing an error. I don’t think the prior owner cared a whole bunch about speed given that his favorite power setting was 2200rpm and 19” of Mp. 😜

This process will be fun to tinker with. From a practical standpoint, it really doesn’t matter, but I’m sometimes a fussbudget about *some* things and insist on perfection. I’ve now accumulated 27 hours of Rocket time and I’m excited to have a project to play with for the *next* 27 hours!

Since I didn’t post last weekend, I’ll add that I got my first actual IMC in the Rocket last weekend. It was solid VMC at my home airport, but changed to 200’ overcast within about 15 miles. I was determined to get to breakfast, so I picked up a pop-up clearance for an LPV approach to breakfast. The controller gave me some headings and altitudes and an easy vector to join final. The Rocket is a wonderfully stabile and predictable machine for IMC. I even had to hand fly as I haven’t installed any servos so far! How’s that for a soft and squishy airline pilot?!? Shoot, I didn’t even have a co-pilot!

I also figured I’d show off my grotesquely oversized feet! I wear cheapie Simpson car racing shoes to reduce the size as much as possible. If I don’t do this, I sometimes have problems with getting my size 12’s caught in the pedals!

Canyonlands, Utah
Headed back West from an Iowa visit and flew for the 12th time this year over the Rockies, which is always "interesting" (aka No Joke). 16,500' this time.

However, stopped in Canyonlands Airport, Utah (KCNY) for some "unfinished business" of canoeing (4 days) the lower Green River, from Mineral Bottom to the Confluence (Green River meets the Colorado River). Awesome time on the river before flying over the "easier" Sierra's back home to the beach.

Smoke On Aviation Team invited a few fellow RV's over for the weekend for some formation learning and fun. 44 airplanes later, 2000 gallons of fuel, 75 formation flights and over 300 take-offs later the weekend was a success, aside from late Saturday weather.

On my way back from Rainbow Aviation LSRI-A class with a certificate. Now the government needs to open for me to get my card. Still need to figure out the Ops Limits hurdle in order to inspect my own plane.

Handy dandy TAS spreadsheet here.

Thanks, Dan. More new stuff to [re]learn. It’s all good, but my mind sure doesn’t soak up knowledge like it did 30 years ago! I really like being able to read things over and over to offset my inability to remember things. That’s one of the many reasons I like this forum and especially the search function!
