28-4 step 1 - weight reduction?

Hi,

Looking at 28-4 step, removing material from control column mounts, I am wondering the purpose. Are we doing this to reduce weight (every little bit helps?) and if so, how much are we reducing? If it is for weight reduction, I might change the shape a little to ease finishing.
