OSH'25: The VAF Thread. PIREPs, Latest News, Pictures….whatever you got.

Bottom line, Gate 41(Hole in the gate/Friar Tuck) will have the gate code posted prior to to exiting for use on the return trip?
I plan on flying in on Friday & need to get supplies.

Looking ahead at potential conditions next week, here's some prudent advice for OSH 25:

- Bring rain gear of some type
- Extra shoes
- Lots of extra socks
- If tent camping, ensure your clothes and anything else you don't want to get wet are stored in something waterproof. Under no circumstances should you count on your tent to keep stuff dry.
- If you fly in consider placing boards under your wheels, have good tie downs, and don't forget gust locks

You really don’t need cash, at least at the show. SOS Bros is cash only but they have an ATM kiosk setup if needed. Not sure if everyone has tap and pay credit card readers so best to have the actual card available, just in case .
Cash can occasionally help enhance the sales price at the fly market or vendor booths. And thanks for the underwheel board reminder.

I manage an aircraft and fly a high-net worth individual all over the world.
I bought two tickets for my wife and myself for the Tuesday’s Van’s Banquet, but on Tuesday I’ll be late to Green Bay (thus OSH) as we have to drop off my Client in PIT first.

So I have two tickets for……..

Ok... maybe not THAT much.....
Do you still have these ? I can buy one or two; can zelle you the cash.

I sent you a DM

Thanks !

Care to give us a link to sign up for that?

So all of our airplanes looked at the forecast for next week, took a vote, and locked the hangar doors from inside….

We’ve flown at least one (usually two) airplanes to the show almost every year for two decades, but this year both Louise and I have enough commitments that we “have to be there”…which meant buying backup tickets on the big aluminum mailing tube to MKE. And it looks like the low-stress option is to let our friends at SWA do the flying this time. Imagine…not having to worry about getting the airplane covers off in the morning and on in the afternoon, not having to worry about what the weather is doing, not having to think about which day we have to leave…or what the mid-afternoon turbulence across Utah is going to be like on the return leg!

And we’ll still show up Friday and hang out at HBC with everyone until the show gets going!

On the other hand, it’s a big boy dream to fly in and have a plane here amongst peers & heroes. There’s a risk and reward to every decision.
As of now there’s just been drizzle - no wind.
The radar shows another line of threatening wx to the SE. Hopefully we’ll get some of that Saint Paul Poberezny protection that sometimes splits cells around OSH 😉.

Well on the bright side it won't take as much effort to drive the tent stakes home unlike dry years. :D

Has there ever been discussions about relocating the event to a location less prone to severe weather? Asking for a friend who doesn't want to bubble-wrap his plane

Here’s the view about 6:30PM tonight from the flightline near Homebuilt HQ. Hey Paul, a couple years ago you were parked in the row right ahead of me. How do you like it now? Good thing I have a seaplane rating IMG_5236.jpeg

Although I love flying in, I've decided to leave my 10 at my buddies place Northern Ill, and make the 2.5 hour drive up. With the inconsistent weather, Friday arrival (my normal) will be a fur ball. Just more excitement than I'm ready for in a "new to me," plane.

Well I’ve got single and multi sea ratings Jeff….but none of our airplanes are on floats….so our decision this year might turn out to be a good one! Next year, the F1 might be finished, and I think that’s gonna have to come.

The real question is….are the scooters submersible?!😉

Camp Scholler at 25th and Rutan (formerly Elm). Grassy areas are wet, but not all are soggy. Unpaved roads are rather sloppy. Temp is around 60F

Ugh. It doesn't take much to turn Scholler's roads in quagmires, especially once folks arrive in mass and the traffic volume skyrockets.

Sunshine is breaking thru, sky clearing, winds dying, drying potential on the upswing

Watching the Vans crew move East today. Our two ship flight of RV6A and RV7 departs tomorrow at 5 am local from KGYR.

seems like the wet camping area could be fixed like farmfields do with tiling, or something. i have been to osh more than once and scholler was closed already by 10am sunday morning because the useable ground was full.just sayin'.

A couple of years ago the Bell 47's were used to assist in moving some water from one of the new camp grounds down near the south 40. This year has a potential to be a mess. Let's be careful out there.

Weather forecast for the weekend does not bode well for the mass arrivals.

Decades ago I wrote EAA a lengthy note describing my fear of perhaps the ultimate disaster with all those airplanes tied down in one place.. hail! I suggested maybe at least move the date to a time of year when there are fewer thunderstorms. They didn't seem all that concerned about it.

I went to a forum about aircraft insurance at Airventure maybe 10-12 years ago. it was put on by Avemco, with the CEO doing the talking. I was there early and he was chatting with the gathering crowd. A Big storm had blown through the night before and he said that they had spent the evening watching the radar with fingers crossed. He said they had enough exposure there that a bad storm could bankrupt the company… Except they reinsure for just that. He said they only worry about two events, Airventure and Sun and Fun, but in both cases they buy insurance to protect the insurance company in case of a bad event.

Looking at ADSB exchange right now, it's a whole herd of RVs with noses pointed to OSH! Gonna be a busy arrival day...

We’re in the screenshot Doug posted of the airborne RV’s. The weather in southern Illinois wasn’t as bad as I feared this morning. We refueled in Danville and had no trouble with the weather or the arrival. We’re in row 321 and have already made a beer run via the HB Welcome Wagon.

Arrived Thursday at the stroke of noon, as the last plane in before the NOTAM.
After the heavy rain on Wed night, taxiing into HBC was "interesting", requiring 1800 rpm at times. I ended up between the island and the pavilion.

So far, fingers crossed, I haven't seen anyone get stuck taxiing.

It has been beautiful weather since Wed noonish.

Late this afternoon people started to park on the "Island" southwest corner of HBC. Not sure why no one was parking there till now...

The 1/2" plywood plates for under the wheels (idea from VAF), are going to be key come departure time. I just grabbed what I had could.

I should have chosen larger, more rectangular pieces, as that allows over-run while trying to the plane onto them, as the wheels don't all go on at the same time. I should have also 45 degree beveled the short edges to assist in rolling the plane onto them. But with help from a bunch of neighbors we got my RV-7A , and a RV-10 onto plywood. Chocks are definitely needed once on the plywood, and preferably rubber ones that don't slip on the plywood.

A Cessna pilot said he had previously used a set of nesting "downspout splash block"

When the grounds get soggy we fill the higher, dryer spots first and give the soggy areas time to dry out. Plus the bridge over the creek can get pretty muddy, so it also needs time to dry out.

Yes, I was the second one at the far island. Got a nice, shady spot. Only one other 7a there. Surprised only (2) others showed up yesterday.

The 15 got paint!
Beautiful, but camouflage is very difficult see (obviously). I'm referring to the safety aspect of "see and be seen". Bright colors, especially whites, reds, and yellows, are the "safest". Used to fly formation with a guy who had a dark red airplane. His airplane tended to disappear from view.. not good!

Good luck with that. I can’t even begin to imagine the amount of money the EAA has invested in this site. Good luck ever finding another airport that would even allow it let alone be surrounded by EAA owned land or land they could purchase suitable for the purpose.

Question:

What is the name or location of the highly recommended breakfast restaurant that is accessible from the North 40 hole in the wall/gate?

We ate there a few years ago and the line was out the door but worth the wait. I can’t for the life of me find it on a map and don’t remember the exact location or the name.

Weather looks like it cleaned up this morning pretty nicely for the mass arrivals, so maybe tomorrow won't be such cluster.
