Replacement Battery

bob1935

I'm New Here
It looks like I may have to replace my battery in my RV12, (ROTAX 912 ULS). Has anyone replaced the current ODDESY with another? What unit?

I replaced mine with standard PC680 (had killed it with Master ON over a weekend).
FWIW AutoZone is an authorized dealer so warranty is easy to take care of if necessary.
And cheap ($173) compared to LifePO's

Try the Fullriver FT230.
I tried the Fullriver in my 7A a few months ago. It would not go all the way down into the battery box. In fact, I had a heck of a time getting the Fullriver out of the battery box because I pushed a little too hard trying to get it down. I bought another Odessey since I knew it would work.

I also considered using an EarthX but with a 40 amp alternator I was concerned that it would over tax the alternator if I ran the battery down during starting. I would think this would be even more of an issue with the Rotax charging system.

Many battery manufacturers exaggerate the specifications. I go by weight which is not as likely to be exaggerated.
Yes weight is good on lead batteries. Flooded electrolyte lead batteries are heavier than Absorbed Glass Mat so gotta compare weights accordingly

The alternator won't give *more* than it is designed for. It will produce its rated/design power into the resistance of the circuit. With your example, you will see 40A (or 45-50A depending on the RPM) for a longer time than you would a 60A alternator with the same EarthX battery at the same state of charge.

Try it, you'll like it -- Chicks dig guys with light weight airplanes....( I can hear your brother calling me names :) )

I put an EarthX in my 912ULS powered Kitfox five years ago. Replaced it a couple of months ago with another EarthX. I had no issues with the battery except that the voltage would be about 12.5-12.9 volts for about 15-20 minutes after starting and I assume that was because the battery was able to pull lots of amps. The first battery worked flawlessly for 4 years and I started to get a slow blinking status LED (cells needed balancing) about the last 6 months. My 912 ULS alternator is only 18 amps.

I found the low voltage after start on an EarthX is common if using a Silent Hectik regulator. Some of the early regulators had software more tuned to lead acid technology. The software has a built in timer that delays charging for 11-12 minutes after power up. The delay is ignored if the battery voltage drops below 12.6 volts. When a lead acid battery is used the 12.6 volts is seen right after starting but the Lithium typically stay above 12.6. That early software also topped out at 13.4 volts and lithium likes to see 14.2 -14.4 volts.

I have a Silent Hektik with an Odyssey 680. It starts at around 13 - 13.2 Volts and builds up to 14 over half an hour or so. I believe the slow build up is designed for lithium batteries.

HEPPC680 Odyssey 50-N18L-A 12V 170CCA AGM Powersport Battery

For me, was in stock at the local "batteries plus" and there if often an online order discount coupon.

Recently replaced an EarthX that had been in service for nine years. No issues, just figured it was due. Hopefully I'll be in the same situation in 2034 (y)
