Baggage Storage Ideas

I’ve searched and not found what I thought to be good solutions, so I’m posting a new thread. I have a new-to-me side-by-side RV and looking for baggage storage ideas for oil, rags, chocks, etc. The -8 has the fwd storage that’s perfect and secure for this. What are some ideas for a secure box, bin, other in the back of a side-by-side that can be strapped down for occasional zero g but is accessible and doesn’t impede travel luggage volume too badly.

I bought an Amazon tool bag. My tie downs, chocks, misc tools fit. I know some builders use their tool box kit. I have tie down rings in the floor if I need.

The best thing I have ever found is the Mission Bags. I'm not sure if they are made anymore unfortunately. I had them for my first RV7 and got some for my newer RV7. They are designed and sit behind the seats. They are slanted to match the seat back angle, maximizing space. I set up the pilot side bag for stuff I need for day to day flying. Tie down rings, window cleaner, oil and spout, tie downs, control locks, fuel sump, air pressure gauge etc..... The right side bag has maintenance items. Tool kit, spare tube, parts container with fasteners. You get the idea. Really nothing else is needed. I like neatness and organization and the Mission Bags provide this. Hopefully you can find them.

I know that I am goign to mis my forward baggage compartment front eh -8 when I start flying the Rocket. I built a fairly large storage bin between the pilot’s legs to carry some of the things I put there - but it won’t be the same. I you use wedges under the seats of the Side-by-side, you MIGHT be able to substitute small wedge-shaped containers about the size of a quart of oil for…a quart of oil… and tools.

I built a small lockable box that’s attached to the back of the right seat. I have oil and chocks and the like in it. Keeps the essentials from flying around and a place to lock my iPad in while I park the plane for lunch.

I just bought the Bison Mountain bag and love it. Was looking for a way to keep all my spares, tools, covers, etc neatly organized and secured, and have gone through several attempts before this one. It is cavernous, and because of where it sits, leaves your baggage area essentially untouched.

Yeah, these are the ones. I think long ago they were called Mission bags but I'm probably wrong. They will hold everything you need for an extended trip.

Just put a piece of flat aluminum above the side flap push rod covers and between the seat back bulkhead and the next bulkhead aft. This creates a drop in space for the items you mention that is easily accessed when standing on ground behind wing. You could then easily make a hinged lid for it if necessary for aerobatic ops.

Small tool bags from Harbor Freight or Home Depot fit nicely behind the seats in front of the flap tube. Easy to access (especially with the super slider mod), frequent use items/chocks/fuel tester behind the pilot and tool kit/battery booster/etc behind the passenger seat.

Lots of good ideas to work on, thanks! I’ve already bought two of the wedge shaped Bison bags from Spruce. (I’ve used one in the -8 aft baggage and it works well there.). Thinking I want them for “luggage” only. Wife seems happy using one, and I think they’re pretty handy. Already using one fuselage side above the flap linkage for the fire extinguisher. Thinking I’ll fabricate a dedicated bin on one side with a lid and screwed to rivnuts in the floor or side leaving enough room for two Bison bags behind the seats. Need it movable for folding bikes! Next step.

I think they were always actually called "RV Flight Bags", but the manufacturer was called Bison Mountain Bags so the name just stuck. Then the company was sold to Mission Bags but the unofficial name lives on.
