Current Lycoming Overhaul Manual

The version I have was revised October 2010...does anyone know if this is the most current version?

Thats the one! Thanks!
I have 60294-7-14 circa January 2011. This revision only changes 4 pages of SSP -1776A Section 1, which updates it to SSP-1776B. This is the "Table of Limits" at the end of the manual. This manual covers "direct drive" models. 76 Series [O-320-H2D] engines and the old geared engines use different overhaul manuals. The previous version, 60294-7-13 I just discovered is online for free download, linked below. Best of all, this document has what Adobe calls "bookmarks", which allow you to jump to the area of the manual with a single click on the appropriate "book mark". These are found on the left side column of the document. By default, they are normally hidden. If hidden, click on the blue icon, 2nd from the top, of the left column, to make the bookmarks appear.

First, be aware that Lycoming doesn't put out an entire new manual each time they revise an overhaul manual. They create what formerly was called a "Letter of Transmittal'. Currently, it is referred to as a "Technical Publication Revision". The overhaul manuals originated as loose leaf documents. This easily allowed replacement of outdated pages with updated ones. When they release a revision, they send those techs/companies who pay a subscription fee, the updated pages and the "Letter of Transmittal" which acts as a cover page. Look at the first 10 pages of your manual. You are looking for 1 or more Technical Publication Revision. These detail which pages were updated, when it happened, and what the current [at that time] revision is of the manual. The shop would simply replace the old pages with the updated pages. Current revision is 14, released in 2011. Lycoming also releases a document, which outlines what Service Bulletins, Service Instructions, & Service Letters relate to each engine. A&Ps are required to have all those documents and to read the ones that relate to the job at hand. Having the Overhaul Manual is not enough. To learn what other documents you need, refer to Lycoming SSP 112-14, which I have linked below:

Lycoming SSP 112-14 download page

Scroll down to page 47. Find your engine displacement. That will show all the Service Bulletins, Service Instructions, & Service Letters that relate to your engine. Many can be downloaded directly from Lycomings web site. Many more are available via web search.

PS I had to edit this, as SSP 112-13 was not the current version. I've updated the text and link to version 14.

Look for a page like the one shown below, to determine what revision number of 60294-7-x you have. It's located in the upper left side.

Edit: Note that version 14 only updates 1 page of the manual.

Example: they use to show how to repair ignition leads.
That information is still in the latest revision, section 4, pages 3 & 4. The image is much better in the new version, as well. I know, because I also have the older revisions back to revision 4 [1974] I'm just glad I didn't have to translate it from the original ancient Greek! :D

Like I said the ignition lead repair information is not in the new manuals:

2 Questions. What 60294-7-? revision number are those figures from? When was that page updated? OK, now I see the issue. You are referring to 60294-6-3, which is an Overhaul Manual for The TIO-541 engine family. I have been referencing 60294-7-14, the Direct Drive manual, which is what most of us mere peons are flying behind. Reference the page I posted at post #11. The Direct Drive Overhaul Manual has not changed Section 4, pages 3-8 since October 1973.

I guess it occasionally pays to be "the poor guy" who can't afford a high dollar Turbocharged IO-541 series 6 cylinder engine! :ROFLMAO::rolleyes:

Bob, FYI, it's not "the newer manuals". It just seems to be that way in the Series 541 manual. I just reviewed the original version of that manual [60294-6-0] circa 1968. Those diagrams were always that way in that manual. I guess Lycoming figures that if you can afford that engine, you have enough money to just buy 2 new pre-made harnesses. FYI, if you could see my face, it's green with envy. I wish I could afford to build a plane with an engine like that! :(

Actually, if I have to guess, due to the higher altitudes those engines are capable of, the quality required of the ignition system to function properly in that thin air, is why they don't want you repairing or rebuilding those ignition harnesses. Thin air offers less insulation against the spark shorting somewhere you don't desire.

Lycoming Service Letter L114 is the place to look. It can be found on Lycoming's site at https://www.lycoming.com/service-letter-no-114-bj.

It can vary by engine/model but, in most cases, 60294-7-14 July 2011 is the latest.
JD is correct.

60294 -7-14 Covers most Direct Drive Engines circa 2011
60294 -9-2 Covers the 76 Series Engines O-320-H2D & O & LO-360-E1A6D These have integral accessories [no separate accessory cover] & have dual magnetos circa 1996
60294 -6-3 Covers the TIO-541 series engines - These have integral accessories, like the 76 Series engines mentioned above. This is the manual that RocketBob is complaining about. circa 1996
60294 -5-6 Covers the old Geared & Supercharged and Geared 435, 480, & 540 cubic inch engines. This manual has even better instructions on making or repairing Ignition wires compared to 60294-7-14 above. circa 1996
