Morning everyone,

So I have these two bolts, (they are not in their original bag so I can't go back to the packing list) and for the life of me, can not find what they are for......They are modified cap screws with coarse threads. Anyone?????

To be honest, I can't even remember which kit they came in.... I think it was the fuselage???

Cheers,

Agreed, they're the bolts that fix the brake flanges to the axles. Somehow I wound up with an extra pair still in whateve bag they came in.

I suspect they're used for this non-typical application because they have reasonably tight tolerance but also have a small head and reduced thread section for clearance.

Cheers,
Just an FYI... Those are called shoulder bolts.

I had the same question a few years ago. Those came out of some bag or other that came with the fuselage kit. After they didn't seem to go anywhere in the fuselage I sort of assumed they were part of the brakes or some such, but then when the finishing kit came it had shoulder bolts for brake flanges included as well.

The original two are still rattling around in one of my hardware bins. As far as I know the brake flanges pictured above in post 4 are the only place on the whole plane that use those, so it's odd that they send two with the fuselage and two more with the finishing kit, but that seems to be what happens.

I still have nightmares about these; somewhere I missed two bolts and the plane is going to come apart.

Thanks Terry!

Yeah, that's such a specialty fastener it seems like they just have to go someplace right? When I saw that I had two more in the finishing kit I went back and reviewed the hardware callouts on all the fuselage prints pretty diligently. When that was no joy I asked on here and got pretty much a duplication of this whole thread.

Reminds me of something a buddy told me years ago; Saturday mornings if he and his wife wanted some "alone time" he would throw $4 worth of quarters out into the back yard and when the kids went to look for them he would tell them that he had tossed $5 worth out there :)

Gotcha, brake flange to axle attach! Thanks for the quick response!!View attachment 83961
Do yourself a favor down the road -- ~200+ hours or so:
1. Get rid of the powder coating under the washers.
2. Add a AN960-516L washer under the socket head.

The powder coat tends to "squish" over time + heat and you will lose torque on the bolt.
The extra washer keeps the nut from bottoming out on the bolt shank and giving you a false torque value.
