Hangar ceiling mount for RV-12

Anne :D

I'm New Here
If the AEX tie downs were drilled and tapped per the KAI (p13-02), you could drill a hole in the top skin of the wing at the AEX location and screw in a tie down ring to lift the aircraft. You can insert a metal hole plug when not in use to cover the hole. I did this mod on my RV-12, although the idea was to be able to lift the wing with an engine hoist to change a flat tire. You would still need a third or fourth lift point.

Thanks John! I have seen this being discussed elsewhere and that in theory (applied loads and supporting structure) it should indeed be ok. I also share the reservations some have expressed... but maybe that's irrational. Wondering if anyone here has actually done it? The third lift point that seems to make most sense for now would be a sling on the propeller.

Has anyone of you found a solution for suspending their RV-12 to the hangar ceiling using attachment points on the aircraft itself? (e.g., wing spars and engine mount?)

I have seen on the forum a solution for an RV-14 (https://vansairforce.net/threads/hangar-ceiling-mount.190727/) and questions – but no definite answer – for an RV-12 (https://vansairforce.net/threads/rv-12-tie-down.79289/#post-962432).

Thanks for any insight!

Contact RV-12 owner Daniel Schmid in Switzerland. I have seen his nice RV-12 hanging in an airport hangar east of Zuerich.

Well, a couple of years ago I opened a thread on VAF, subject hanging your RV on hangers in a hangar. This has, in the process of site improvement, mysteriously vanished...
Short version: hangar space is scarce around here, so new hangars are built taking into consideration the hanging of airplanes in height and load bearing. Some example of hanging RVs, on hangers in their respective hangar, on my field here.

A short video of the how the system works here

AFAIK 2x RV-12 are enjoying additional airborne time on their hangers (hangars not on my field), though I'm not sure of their attach points, but I know both of them owners/builders.

Here are some photos the tie down ring installed on top. If you are concerned about pull out, you could thread the AEX all the through the wing and use a long eye ring with a nut attached to it on the bottom of the wing. A forward lifting point that attaches to the firewall/nose gear would give you three good lifting points.

if you lift straight up at the wing eyebolts, how much does the aircraft want to tip forward .. or backward? I'm just thinking how much more convenient tire changes would be not having to use the horses and push up/down on the tail to get them in place.. What would be a good affordable & safe device to hang on the ceiling?
