RV10 TKS ice protection

I'm New Here
I was just on the phone with CAV Systems tech support Inquiring about the shelf life of their TKTS fluid for a Cirrus SR22T that we are purchasing.

I mentioned to them that we really wanted to get an RV 10 but due to the fact that were in Vermont we really needed ice protection. He was saying that they have had internal communications within the company and that they would design a system for the RV 10 if they had 30 customers that were interested. This group of owners would have to put down a deposit of about $15,000 between them so that they had some skin in the game. He estimated that the system complete would be about $30,000. Obviously you would be on your own to install. He did say that this would be a cuff installation that would install over the existing wing.

I thought the group might be interested in this as it would be quite an upgrade to the RV 10.

You might check with some of the folks in this thread:

I think there's some interest but also a few questions about what testing would be performed on the system prior to release.

Probably the same testing as the brs chute…none.

The real problem with this, is it will be very difficult if not impossible to have the aircraft certified for known icing, and the regulations are very clear in that it is illegal to fly in known or forecast icing conditions in aircraft that are not certified FIKI.
I guess you could argue it is useful if you encounter icing that is moderate or severe, but you’d be illegal flying that day anyway.

I don’t care if it certified FIKI. I was a partner in an SR22 for a few years with the non-FIKI TKS system and LOVED IT. Yes, I would have rather had FIKI but living in Minnesota I would be interested in TKS for my RV-14A. Shouldn’t be all that different than the RV-10 I would think. Same wing, just shorter

There’s more to it than that and certification isn’t the issue. Testing for FIKI is quite involved and I for one would not want to install a system and fly into known icing without having it completely tested in simulated icing conditions. YMMV….

I didn’t say I was going to fly into known icing. I said that living in MN there is great utility in having another tool in your toolbox to get out of icing if you find yourself there. And living in MN, if you fly IFR in the winter you will find ice, even if it isn’t forecast or known.

I get it. I lived in the mid-Atlantic region for 12 years so forecast icing for half the year was a given. The problem is you don’t install anti-ice/device systems on a whim and it doesn’t matter how you approach icing situations. The bottom line is if you are going to rely on it, it needs to work properly and you can’t be sure it will without proper in-flight testing under controlled icing conditions which is more than just seeing if fluid oozes out, a boot inflates, or a heated surface heats up.

Not clear with your version. First, encountering ice is not illegal! Second, the reg state that flight into known icing conditions or forecasted severe icing requires special equipment.

Cirrus has sold, and still sells a ton of airplanes equipped with TKS that are NOT certified for flight into known icing (FIKI).
Are you suggesting there is something wrong with flying those planes? (Obviously I am not talking about “known icing”)

Legal doesn’t mean safe or smart…
Even tested systems have their issues…I don’t think any test can simulate every icing condition encountered. Even certified airplanes can get caught up in icing beyond their design limits.
