Late to the game in this forum...but the last 4 months have been CRAZY!!!
  1. Sam James Cowl/Plenum ordered and delivered
  2. Engine ordered (IO-390-EXP119 - Dual P-Mag, Silver Case, Black Cylinders)
  3. Prop/Spinner ordered (Hartzell Explorer 72") - Delivery next month
  4. First Grandbaby/Wingman (Willow) arrived!
  5. Crow Harnesses arrived
  6. Most of the FWF items were ordered from Van's (had to make my own kit as you can imagine)
  7. Finally got to take the first "sitting in the plane" glory shot!
  8. Ordered all the engine transducers from Stein and started talking panel
  9. Got on the wait list for a hangar at my home base
It's getting real!!! Been a long time coming...but now I am in hurry up and wait mode with Lycoming...but that will give me time to get the panel in.

THANK YOU ALL for the thoughtful help all these years. I can feel it!

Oh...did you catch it? We are just in LOVE with #4

Visited the Mothership...ish! Unfortunately, I arrived too late on Friday to get a tour and had to leave on Sunday.

Had the pleasure of hearing Van give a great presentation on the history of Van's, Experimental Aviation, and his journey at a conference this weekend for the Oregon Wing of the Civil Air Patrol in McMinnville, OR. I also had the chance to go on a VIP tour of the Spruce Goose at the Evergreen Aviation Museum.

We'd met prior (way back when I started my build, so it was good to share and catch up).

It was a fun weekend.

You're gonna love that IO390/RV7/3 blade prop combo. I have that setup with a Whirlwind prop and on a short field takeoff it feels like you're being shot out of a cannon.

Keep pounding those rivits! You are going to love the power from the 390!

Bill,

Talk to me about cooling. How well is your setup doing?

Can you share some more photos (PM if better) of your setup? I have the parts for the same...but not committed yet.

BTW: We met ages ago...talking giant scale RC. Small world.

Jan 2026 was a big month for the slow build!

Panel has arrived.

Tail feathers installed over the last two weekends! I’m done drilling big holes in the longerons!

Had some fun working on the static system needs this weekend.

I had bought the SafeAir1 system AGES ago, so figured I’d stick with it…ish.

After reading all the threads on the static errors seen with ports that weren’t the “Vans standard” SD-42-BSLF rivet, I went a “hybrid” route.

Simply put, I filed down the nubbin machined in the face of the SafeAir1 port and drilled the now flat face to #30. Then simply drilled the standard #30 hole in the skin at the DWG 28 location (NOT the often "confused for correct" Static Port Kit Instructions location meant for the RV-6).

The last mod was to remove a little from the side of the port fitting face to clear the bulkhead flange before ProSealing the flange to the inside of the skin, and the rivet (less the mandrel) to the outside of the skin.

All in all, not bad, and now I get the security of the SafeAir1 fittings, but the profile of the original and apparently most accurate port shape.

Next up was the aft tubing and loop routing. Wasn’t tough, and I feel the result was clean and effective.

Simply added a MS21919DG4 Adel Clamp to the most forward F-636 bolt and replaced the AN960-10 with a -10L. Keeps the line clear of all hardware and nicely secured. I’ll eventually add the clips called out in DWG 25 along the longeron.

Last thing to do was to modify the chunky F-705G angle and the F-705E and F-705D to allow the 1/4” line to pass through. Fortunately, I’ve not final riveted the angle in yet…so I removed it, marked a center point between the rivets with 2+ dia edge distance, and up sized to 1/4” final.

Once reinstalled, used my angle drill and, using the now drilled angle, match drilled the hole in the rest.

Static line can now make it to the panel.

Would really be nice if Vans updated the plans/manual to call this out early (or at all), allowing this to be done in the initial construction vs later. Nonetheless, it wasn’t impossible.

Oh, I also installed the vent NACAs.

Onto the next! Parts are getting sparse!
