WDYDWYRTW? (9/14-15/2024)

Standard mission from W96 (New Kent International Aerodrome, Quinton VA) to Allentown. Got my whackiest IFR route yet, as they wanted me to tour Harrisburg PA along the way. I successfully begged for a shortcut. 😃

Actually, the last two weeks of flying fun! First, flew to Escalante, Utah. Always great to overfly Tonopah.

Got the airport car and did (2) days of wandering/running the many trails, including slot canyons.

Next, off to Telluride! Been going there for over 20 years. Always great flying in, and they take great care of us Experimentals. Lotsa jet traffic as the Film Festival was ending. Spent a couple days hiking with the Wifey, then went on a (4) day, 120 mile gravel bike adventure (97% dirt). Went over (4) passes: Imogene, Engineer, Cinnamon, and Ophir.

Pretty rugged route for a gravel bike and the altitude was a real weezer. Enjoyed glamping and staying at great places in Ouray, Lake City, Silverton, and home base (Telluride). I did what I called, "The extended Alpine loop."

Had an awesome time. Then, (2) days before I was to return home, decided to take the magic carpet for a spin around Telluride. Climbed out, turned the boost pump off, then the fuel PSI dropped, and the engine started to fail. 😮 To be continued in the maintenance section!

Flew a friend’s RV6A and compared it to my well equipped 9A
I dont miss aero, so glad I decided to build the 9A

The 6A and the 9A each have their missions. The 6A was a fun sport plane, but it was steam gauges w limited nav equipment and single radio, etc. It has really good acceleration and sport performance. It gets up and moves with the O 360 and CS prop.

My 9A is a fully stocked G3x suite. It has similar climb performance as the 6A, but the landings are Quite different. He is flying the pattern at close to 90 Kts in the 6A, whereas I fly the 9A about 70 kts in pattern.

But the main difference is the 6A is not equipped for cross countries; doable yes, but probably not very fun. My 9 A is really set up for cross countries with Otto doing the heavy lifting, and boring parts.

Funny story. We were both talking to the tower at different times. Being based at the same airport, the tower came back with different N numbers depending on who was talking. Pretty funny really.

I think the prettiest drive I ever did was from Grand Junction to Durango going right through Silverton and Telluride. What a fun place. When we lived in Snowmass we took our Ranger over the trails from Ashcroft to Crested Butte. That whole part of the country is amazing. We were in Snowmass last week before last for the JAS Festival. We really miss the mountains!! Cool pictures and sounds like a fun bike ride. It was lots easier in the Polaris!!

Imogene on a bicycle. That's real stuff. 😀👍🏻

First, flew to Escalante, Utah. ... Got the airport car and did (2) days of wandering/running the many trails, including slot canyons.

My wife and I spent a lot of last October exploring southern Utah, by car. Dead Horse Point, Canyonlands, Arches, Little Wild Horse Canyon, Goblin Valley, Capitol Reef, Escalante, Kodachrome Basin, and Bryce Canyon. Man, that is some spectacular terrain. Everyone should visit it at some point, if at all possible. Absolutely breathtaking.

Anyways... This past weekend, I cheated on the RV. It had been about four months since I had flown anything other than the RV-12, and it really spoils you, it's such a simple airplane. So I rented a Cardinal RG to knock off some rust. Controls for fuel mixture, prop RPM, cowl flaps, landing gear... and a panel from the 1970s with only a tiny hint of modernity in the form of a GNS430 with ADSB-in. At least the new IO-390 up front makes for fairly nice performance numbers. I only flew it for 1.1 hours but it was a good reminder of how much easier and more fun it is to fly RVs!

I was fortunate enough to be raised in Durango (noticed I didn't say 'grew up'. Neve did that. I've seen too many grownups to be interested.....) and my Dad was an avid 4WD-er way before it was cool! It was unusual to find someone else on those 'roads'. Silverton, Ouray (pronounced u-RAY), Telluride (when it was a sleepy little old mining town!!), and places that didn't have names! Many of those roads were interconnecting mining roads to get the ore from the mines back to civilization by wagon or mule train. AMAZING place to be a kid! Graduated high school and headed out into the world, but return at least once a year!

Several of the schools, colleges, and others in our area have special observances this month to show Military Appreciation. The Cincinnati Warbirds squadron was asked to participate, and we River Rats (RV formation group) are sometimes asked to join them. I was the only one of us that could this weekend, but was fun and an honor to participate. We had a small group, four ships, but we looked good. Lead was Todd Winemiller in his T-6, and on wing was two North American L-17’s (military Navions). I was the lone RV in the diamond. I don’t have smoke, but it looks like I do.
The video is a local high school football game during the singing of the National Anthem.

Well - no video, just a pic on the run in. The video looked and sounded great….
