Removing old VOR antenna

I have a still somewhat new-to-me RV9-A that has an old VOR nav antenna that is no longer needed on this aircraft. First, is this difficult to remove and secondly, what is the recommended method to fill the open space left once removed so weather and bugs don't get in?Screenshot 2024-09-11 at 10.19.30 AM.png

Removal looks easy enough with a Phillips head screwdriver; remove the fiberglass tip, remove antenna. For the antenna coax cable I’d cut off the BNC connector then reverse snake it out through the tail cone. To fill the gap, find an RV builder buddy that can show you the joys of fiberglass! But really, that’d be an easy patch job with some epoxy, glass cloth and some sanding work.

OK, half serious here, given you'll have a hole, if you fill it, you have a paint issue, etc....
So... Saw off the rods & leave the 'puck'.

Who knows? Maybe some future buyer will want VOR and be happy you didn't fill the hole!

Really not a bad idea, thanks

Remove the antenna, and sell it. Take the funds and buy a new tip from Vans, and paint it and reinstall.

Very slightly off topic:
Walk around any airport. You’ll see a lot of planes with an ADF antenna on their belly, but no ADF in the panel (or maybe one that’s never used). Why? Because if they removed the antenna there’d be a hole to patch. So, if you enjoy working on the plane, pull it and fix it. If you hate working on planes, just leave it. Your choice.

Sell the tip and the antenna, especially if it is a nice antenna with the built in balun and co-ax connection?

Don

I know the gov't is turning off VOR's, but isn't that antenna also an ILS/LOC antenna?
Might be a handy thing to keep around, just in case.
