Exhaust pipe is touching cowling

I am building a Legacy 12 using a Rotax ULS. It has an air intake duct. Problem is the #2 exhaust pipe is touching the cowing. It’s also looks like to get the oil filter off I’ll have to remove that pipe. I haven’t put any heat shield fabric yet which may make things worse. Any suggestions or advice as to what I can do?

I assume from your description that it’s on the pilot side. We had that problem and had our mechanic realign the muffler slightly towards the other side that gave the appropriate appropriate clearance, but we noticed it was causing one of the brackets that hold the springs to rub on the cowling so we filed that bracket down and now it’s fine.

I think I have a work around. I’m going to cut out the air duct where it hits and epoxy in a bulge. Not big but enough to give it some clearance. This seems to be the easiest fix, I hope.

Many of us have fiberglassed a slight bulge to provide the desired clearance. You should have no exhaust pipe clearance problem installing/removing the OEM ROTAX oil filter.

Well I don’t know whether to feel mad, stupid or just oh well. When I was checking the clearance on the exhaust pipes I didn’t look or see if the muffler was going to align. Instead I just installed the pipes as they were numbered. Turns out the manufacture got the numbers backwards on number 1&2. The clearance issue would have been fine had I discovered it before I installed the bulge. I guess I’ll just call oh well and par for the course.
