Whirl Wind Tear Down "Finds"

For those with Whirl Wind props, how common is it to find issues during the teardown inspections and how expensive are they to fix?

-Jason

I run the RV200 whirlwind prop on my 9A, and collected a whole series of rock chips and dings before it was time to send it in for the hub check at 752 hours and 5 years of service. I elected to have WW tear down the blades and refinish them, new nickel leading edges, new paint etc as well as the hub inspection - pretty much a worst-case scenario for the blades, though the hub was in excellent shape. This was March of 2021, total bill was $3425.

After 11 years and about 800 hours of flying, my RV200 started to sling some grease. I drove it out to their service center in Austinburg, OH. dropped it off at 8am, picked it up around 3pm and drove back to MD the same day. My cost in July of 2021 was $1150. No findings were reported.

That's what I was quoted for the hub check, the remainder of my cost was for the blade refurb.

Greg,
Is your IO-360 180 or 200hp?

In 2014, my WW 200RV was slinging grease badly enough that I decided to get a hub overhaul, at 300 hrs. I was told at that time by the folks in OH that there was a compatibility problem with a change in grease and the O-rings, and that replacement O-rings would solve the problem.

The hub overhaul was done by Stockton Propeller, with telephone consulting to the folks in OH. They found that the bearing races were badly pitted and spalled. The overhaul, including all new internal bearings and races as well as O-rings, came to about $1800.

IO-360-A1A. I avoid continuous operation above 2550 RPM, and never operate between 2000--2350 RPM.
