Paul at Flyleds has released a 7 Star LED drop in replacement for my old HID's that are currently in my RV-10.

They can only be fitted by removing the wing tip.

The old HID's coming out,

The new heat-sinks are a work of art ,

These lights are crazy bright at 8400 Lumens each !

This is a single light shining on my neighbours hangar,

The new lights are an instant MASSIVE upgrade to my old HID's however ever since the RV-14 came out with its large light cutout, I had wondered what they would look like on the RV-10. The standard Duckwork template was for an older and smaller light and restricts all of the good photons of light from Flyleds massive 7 spot.

It was time to order the RV-14 parts from Van's and get out the Dremmel !

With the new RV-14 lenses and retainers, it was a simple job to mark out and CUT INTO MY PAINTED WING ! ( Did I mention measure twice cut once ! )

RV-10 Wing Tip

Is it small enough that it could fit in the wing tip of the RV-10 as opposed to leading edge? In my case, I have a 15 gal aux fuel tank in the way.

Did the leading edge kit you ordered from Van's include a bracket for mounting the light as well or did it just include the lens and the parts to mount the lens? I know you already had the Duckworks kit but I'm thinking about putting this in the RV-10 leading edges I am about to build and the 'LL LENS KIT RV-10' on the Van's website sounds like it may not come with the bracket for the light.

Hi Tim,

The parts you will need from Vans are,

2 x W-00014 RV-14 Lens
4 x W-00018 RV-14 Lens Retainer
8 x K 1000-06 Nutplates

2 x Round Lampless Kit from Duckworks Aviation , I think you can order just the bracket as you will not use the smaller lenses.

I'll do some measurements next week of the cut out.There is no template that I know of , i just worked it out based on a local RV-14

Hi Steve.
These area PAR36 sized light and won't fit in the wingtips.
You'd be looking for our The Works kit instead.

Hi Rob.
With around 7-8 amps of current draw and our deliberately low-tech (and therefore noiseless) power regulation used for the LEDs, we specify 14AWG. Ashley had 16AWG already in his wings and I think he's still moderately happy with the outcome!
So, 16 will work but 14 is preferred with a little less voltage drop over the run.
(Two runs of 18AWG in parallel will also work a treat if you have ~100ft spare.)

Yes indeed.

I commented in the video last year about the works kit, the instructions say "bring sunglasses" and I reckon welding goggles. These new lights bring that to reality.

Will the -14 parts fit into a -7 wing, or are they a different rib shape?

Given the experimental nature of this hobby I would think that it's close enough for you to make it work, but please allow me to crowd source that answer!

Brains trust:
The RV-10/-14 wing is a different airfoil shape to the -7/-8 wing, but is the leading edge similar enough in shape that the RV-14 light bracket W-00017 and lens W-00014 would still fit?

Note that Dustyone has his lights sitting in a Duckworks Aviation mounting bracket.

I currently have the FLYLED wing tip position and strobe kit and get a ton of compliments. My existing Ductworks leading edge lights are more than not bright enough even with less installed. Talked to Paul at Oshkosh and he said the wing tips must be removed to install in the existing Ductworks leading edge kit. My. wing tips are riveted on and I vinyl wrapped my airplane so I did not want to consider this an option. I purchased one of the light kits to try and sure enough 100% they can be installed through the current opening of the Ductworks kit with some patience.
Assembling the light kit per his instructions but doing the final assembly inside the wing hole is very easily accomplished.
I am going to get with him and order up the second one for my left wing, might as well go for the sun effect!
Once received I would be happy to document and picture the install, again not bad at all and completed in under 1 hour!

Wing Cut-Out Measurements

I have had a few requests for a template of the wing cut out to fit the RV-14 lens kit.
The following is all you will need.

First order the RV-14 lens and retainers (#nos in this thread )

Once you have the retainers, you use them to finish the radius at the top and bottom of the cut-out.

Using the dimensions above,mark out the top of the leading edge and then use one of the retainers to get the matching radius.

Use the same method for the lower cut out. I found using a square against the wing end was a great way to make sure everything was square and straight.

The cut was made using a thin disc metal cutting Dremel, an easy tool to control.
Finishing with a scotch wheel and then I masked up and painted the inside wing cavity.

I have been flying with these lights for over a month now and have been surprised by how many people come over after you land to comment how visible you are from soo far away.
Truly a great safety improvement even for day VFR

I put the lights in via the Wingtip removal method and I personally do not think that you need the RV-14 openings. They are bright enough and the angle of the lighting I believe is focused forwards enough not to worry about the need to adjust from the standard Duckworks kit.

But as they say, your distance may vary.

Standard Wing cut outs are fine !

Andrew is correct,

these new crazy bright lights work very well with the standard cut out that most RV-10's will have with the original Duckwork template.

About 2 years ago I had a bird strike though my L/H landing light, the hapless feathered aviator smashed through my light lens and bruised the top of the L/H leading edge. ( you can see the paint damage on page one )

So for me, the motivation for the larger RV-14 cutout, allowed me to cut out most of the damaged area from the bird strike, fit new lenses and have a nice visual upgrade.

The larger cut out does make the aircraft more visible from more angles. I first noticed this with my friends RV-14,you could see both of his lights from more angles than my RV-10. Also if you have a look again at the taxi video above of my RV-10, you can see a large amount of reflected light, both immediately up and down from the leading edge as the '10 taxi's by.

Near miss , Lucky Bat

I'm still enjoying the absolute awesomeness of the Flyled 7 Star Landing lights.

Tonight was just a couple of circuits and I was able to film the last landing with my Iphone 11 while my friend landed from the R/H seat. Super lucky to catch the near miss with the bat.

RV-7 Seven Star Upgrade

A friends RV-7A received the Royal Seven Star Upgrade.

The original lights were the old HID lights from approx. 10 years ago.
The original mounts needed very little modification and the Seven Stars went straight in via the wing tip.
All finished up in one mornings work session.
