Default What did you do with your RV this weekend? (3/26/2022 - 3/27/2022)

(Friday) I sat safety pilot again for a friend logging IFR hood time, so that was enjoyable just looking at the countryside on a cool, smooth morning. The TFR was a balloon (wasn't red when we flew).

Later in the morning Rob ‘Smokey’ Ray stopped by and visited for a few minutes (RV-4, RV-X, RV-rocket, F-16 and more). A great American that I’m honored to call friend. A flag that he flew in his F-16 back in the day over some hot spots sits on my desk one foot from my keyboard as I type this. Been on my desk for nearly two decades now.

Saturday dealing with yard work dust that has me feeling like crud. Staying close to home. Ugh. Hoping feel better Sunday.

I haven't been close to Mt. St. Helens in awhile so on Friday I stopped by on the way back to Arlington, WA from Scappoose, OR. There were many climbers on the south slope of the mountain. The ones who weren’t at the rim appeared to be still climbing up.

Approaching Mt. St. Helens from the SW. Note the base of Mt. Rainier in the background to the left.

Mt. Adams, looking East.

The lava dome continues to slowly build in the crater of Mt. St. Helens. Pretty soon it will have a peak again (in terms of geologic time, of course)! Looking SSW.

Climbers on the South slope of Mt. St. Helens, with Spirit Lake in the background. One guy appears to be waving his arms at me (On the rim, 5th from the right). If you zoom in on the folks near the rim you can see him, and other details of the climbers. Over the years since the original eruption a few climbers have fallen into the crater; some were rescued and some died.

Picture of the rim looking East, showing the snow cornice detail.

A nice day to fly.
Carl N.

Default 7V2 flight

The weather had been pretty bad all week, so when it cleared Friday we flew over to Northfork Valley Airport (7V2) on the western slope of Colorado.

I normally go over Marshall pass rather than follow Highway 50 over Monarch pass. Here is the view looking north as we head west over Marshall. Mount Ouray is the first mountain you see, with the Collegiate peaks in the background.

Nothfork Valley is a really pretty airport, in between Paonia and Hotchkiss Colorado. Here is the "old" building. 7V2 is co-owned by Delta County and town of Paonia.

This is cattle and farming country, very nice people, especially Mike who lives on and takes care of the airport. He recommended Zack's BBQ in Hotchkiss, so we took the crew car there for lunch. I had a great BBQ brisket sandwich. The view from the ramp is spectacular. Here we are looking mainly southwest, back towards the West Elk wilderness area.

We retraced our flight home, and got back to KFLY in the late afternoon. What wonderful machines these are.

Blue skies

Filled up with CHF 2.68/liter fuel, and had to make sure that the Matterhorn was still there. It was.

Main goal was to test o2 saturation on different setting on the G5 oxygen concentrator. Tried all settings from 6 down to 3, and stayed at 99%, so there's capacity for 2, no problem, at least up to 13k. The kind GVA Info controllers kept the flight path clear for me while testing.

OK, not as cool as flying around some of the scenery shown above, but it was still a very good flight.
