RV-8 and the Day After Thanksgiving

It is unbelievable how beautiful the 4 day Thanksgiving weekend was in the ordinarily drab and rain drenched Northwest. Most years I am lucky to get one day of flying, this year I got three, just over 8 hours in three days.

Friday we went out to Forks for lunch and up the coast to Tatoosh Island and Cape Flattery. The low sun angle created some interesting shots along the north coast.

The video can be found here.

Left a long reply, and played a fun game. Great video, as always.

Sure would appreciate hearing about your cameras, the mounting, etc. Thanks for the great videos!

3 Cameras

I use at least 3 cameras, sometimes others as well.

On the wing I have a GoPro Hero 7 Black mounted underneath on a PlaneAround mount.

Mount: https://planearound.com/shop?olsPage...wingtip-bundle

You can see it under the wing in the first picture in this thread.

In the cockpit I have a Drift Ghost 4K clamped to the roll bar.

For hand held shots to the sides I use my iPhone 8.

I use a Drift Ghost 4K (value, endurance, and aerodynamics) and a mount like you have on my wing. How did you mount the camera to the roll bar?

Thanks for providing the spectacular videos. Your scenery and editing are excellent.

I have a clamp mount that I bought for something a long time ago. I don't know where I got it or who made/sold it. If I can remember I will take a picture next time I am at the airport.

It is the Pedco Ultra Clamp available at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/UltraClamp-As...5339585&sr=8-1

I found that using it as supplied allowed for a lot of camera shake so I quit using it for a number of years. When I got the -8 I wanted something to clamp on the roll bar, but this would take up too much room. Then I got the bright idea to take off the bottom piece and mount the camera directly to the clamp and it works great.

Great Video Steve!!

I am doing research for a first video camera. The mission is multiple, the first panel recording for self evaluation of IFR approaches etc, so being able to see the G3X clearly is required. Second would be external mounting for scenery recording.

Regarding the Drift 4K, it seems the audio is from only the external microphones? Is the FOV adjusted with optics or digital zoom?

It appears the unit can be somewhat controlled by a phone app, does that work well so wrenching around in the cockpit or pre starting video for a wing tip mount can be avoided?
Thanks.

Regarding the Drift 4K, the manual states that it has 2 external microphones, one in front one in back that can be selected through the setup menu. Those are going to be useless inside the airplane. Among other places, Flightflix sells cable adapters to tie an external microphone into your headset so that what you hear in your headset is recorded on the camera. I have never used any and so have no idea how well they may, or may not, work. They can be found at: https://flightflix.net/product-category/ga/

I think the FOV is adjusted with software. It can be set in the settings menu to either 90, 115, or 140 degrees. In addition, on the top of the camera is a zoom control. I believe that is done via software and not optically. If you go beyond about 50% zoom the image gets really grainy.

I have tried controlling it with the phone app without much success. I had it it mounted on the wing when I tried it, but it didn't work very well. Also, battery life is degraded when using the app.

The manual for the Drift 4K is available here: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/354137.pdf
