Doing some low level maintenance (puttering) at the hangar. Took the Ninebot scooter to the FBO for bathroom break and cruise around the ramp, and was amused to see that it was apparently Business Jet weekend at our little uncontrolled regional airport. It's in the heart of Summer Vacationland USA, but this is a higher level of Turbine Presence than would be normal for a summer Saturday around here.

Yesterday we pretended to be TX, with temp = 91, DP 70, light winds. We don't often see 72F at 6500' (5k above the ground). (Here is where you southerners or high terrainers note you have a million degrees at altitude) Here a crummy snap of the screen.

Saturday was spent finishing the 100 hour/Annual inspection on the two RV-6's in the hangar with the final reward being a 50 minute flight around the local area with the wife.

I put the larger tires on this time around. Hopefully the bigger footprint will help on the grass surface we operate from here. Thankfully there was sufficient room inside the spats and I didn't have to do much other than enlarge the openings underneath.

Big week (cont)

Tuesday - KFYE-KBCB (Va Tech) to move in daughter #2 and #3. (2:39)

Thursday - KBCB-KFYE for some maintenance and a reset. (3:09)

Friday - KFYE-KTDW (Amarillo) for moms 80th birthday. (4:14)

Sunday - KTDW-KFYE for a week of rest. (4:15)

Counting last weekends trip to Boston and back I’ve flown the RV 28 hrs 11 mins since last Saturday. What a great little plane.

I’m the bald one.

Took two contract ATC staff from local tower on a 'ride-along' in my -7.
You would be surprised how little 'outside the office' exposure they get.
Both were in late 20's with a number of years in the field after their 'cert'.
One said he was Navy and spend 2 years 'on the boat' but didnt offer any more details.

Local rides gave them a great spatial orientation to landmarks and waypoints they had only seen on a map or a screen. Very useful waste of 100LL.
(plus, cant hurt to have a friend in the tower if I ever screw up) :D

Took a friends RV3 to the LAA Popham fly-in; did some RV3 and RV14 formation on the way home 👍

Grandson

Our grandson comes a week every summer from Virginia.
He had short list of things he wanted to do this year and one was a flight in Pop pops plane.
Managed to get two flights in this week.
I think he enjoyed it as he was bouncing off the walls for about an hour afterwards.

He's the one in the green shirt.

Mackinac Island

The wife and I made a trip from Alabama to visit Mackinac Island. I can tell you that the weather there is definitely much better than the heat in Alabama! This was one of her favorite trips! :)

I've done that a few times. There is something about flying into a small island airport and getting picked up by a horse-driven taxi! It is a special place.

Flew to Bethel Maine to spend time at our lake house

My bride and I flew to Bethel Maine (0B1) to spend time at our lakehouse. I could really use that RV-15 on floats!

Time for better oil cooler so that’s a plan for a weekend ;)[/QUOTE

Add end plates to a drawn cup cooler to improve their heat transfer capacity. In effect, trap flow into passages defined by the "fins" found on the ends of the cooler. No point in wasting all that nice hot surface.

I flew in position 12 and as part of a synchro pair in the Freedom Formation's 13-ship display team at the Pacific Airshow.

Which means I got to do an opposing pass down the beach at 230' and 160 knots, 200m in front of more than 100,000 people, with the regulator watching approvingly.

Not every day you can say that happened.

My wife and I are flying up to Mackinac Island tomorrow morning for the day. I was able to get both our folding bikes into the back of my 9A. It is only a 90 min flight for us so not as much fun as your trip from Alabama!
