Vertical Stab Lightening holes

Just a quick survey as to how may folks opted to lighten the spar on their VS?

Although it doesn't save a lot of weight, lighten everything you can. "Build lightness in" as Van's would say.

That's how I got my empty weight down to 990 lbs for its first flight.

Done in the newer kits already

My 9 tail kit had the VS spar doubler already "lightened".

All new kits have them already added...if that helps your decision making.

At the time, the choice was optional and I cut in the lightening holes. I consider the weight saving to be significant. I documented the weight before and after cutting in the lightening holes and posted the result here:

Caution

Be sure to cut holes ONLY in the thick spar NOT in the thinner material. I made the mistake of cutting through both and thought it would not matter Vans said it MUST be replaced. Simple case of not paying close enough attention. :
