using a vixen file without shredding yourself

I bought a double-sided vixen file from an autobody shop.
They wanted $$$ for the handle that mated with it - I declined.

This version doesn't have a tail at all, just squared off ends.

Got it home and thought that it looked familiar. Yup, Gramps left me one with his tools - he worked as an a/c mechanic on Cranes in WWII, in the CATP.

Anyhow, here are two ways to make handles - mine is simpler than his, but his is more comfortable to use.

His:

Mine:
- just a couple wood screws, and a rounded over chunk of scrap 2x4 cut down a bit.

I thought I'd seen someone made one from plexiglass or lexan, but couldn't find it, or I'd link it here too.

I was much happier after having a handle on the vixen file. They really remove the material.

It can be even simpler....

I used RTV to attach a strip of 1/2 inch plywood on one side of my file - based on a tip from an old WWII aircraft worker.

Been working for 15+ years now, and is one of my favorite tools.

The hardest part was snapping the vixen file into a 4 to 6 inch length and smoothing the ends on a grinder...

Don't forget to degrease it first...
