Two belt driven alternators

Hornet2008

Well Known Member
Friend of mine has an RV 10 and has experience a secondary alternator failure.
Rather than install another secondary gear driven alternator my friend would prefer to mount a second belt driven alternator on the unused air conditioning pulley. Is it it possible to mount a second alternator on the front of the motor.
Has anyone investigated the possibility of this type of set up? It is an IO 540 c/s propeller with an plane power belt driven primary alternator. Additionally, is it possible without modifying the cowling?

Yes

I have two belt driven alternators. You will need a dual groove flywheel used for AC. And a small nipendenso alternator out of Suzuki sameri. Wou will need to build your own mount and tensioning brackets.

Works great

Just make sure your friend knows that if one belt fails, there is a very good chance it will take the second belt with it. If it were me, I would stick with the gear driven alternator as my backup.
